GS550 oil in the left had crankcase

I have a Gs550E 1978. Think its had a fair bit of stuff changed on it. I have recently noticed oil leaking out of the left hand crank case cover. I was a bit surprised there was oil in there at all and have presumed that this is a fault however have read posts elsewhere that this is the norm. Can anyone verify this for me. I have stripped the magneto off and the starter motor clutch and there is an oil seal behind this which is fairly worn or may even be the wrong size. Its not just a light spray of oil. there was a good few mills of oil in there.

So there is an oil seal there on the crank, although when I swapped out the stator on the GS550 I had, I recall there being some oil in that sidecover too.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry it has been a while acknowledging your reply.
That gives me a little more reassurace. When I looked in more detail there is a return to the sump at the bottom of the engine case and there is the gears for the starter motor clutch and bearings in there that will need lubricating I guess.
I was just a bit surprised when I got an oil leak in that side engine casing. Panic over.

I used to work at a Suzuki dealer and did a load of work on GS550's (Built a 170mph 620cc 'GS550' 45+ years ago)
It's an incredibly reliable motor, if bike just 'fell over' there is a possibility case moved slightly and damaged gasket
There should be two hollow dowels to keep things lined up but on an almost 50 yr old bike there is no knowing whats been done in the past.

This one was with a scrap merchant when I was lucky enough to come across it 20 years ago. Have been very slowly restoring it.
With this oil thing what confused me was that there is an oil seal separating the first of the main bearings and the magneto / stator / starter motor clutch gears in that side case. If they are all bathed in engine oil why would you need to separate them with an oil seal?
I have fitted a new gasket and it is now leak free.
