Had a shop mount and balance tires- How much weight is too much?

I just got my rims back from the shop. They're spoked 18 and 19 inch wheels from a CL350. The guys put 70g on the rear and 50g on the front. That seems like WAY TOO MUCH, I got into a huge argument with the guy. Basically, 1/8 of my rim is covered in weights.

I bought a set of respoked, balanced wheels. Put on Avon Rode Riders (which don't have a dot or any marking on them). They added tubes and valve stems, which they had to order.

Am I wrong to think that these guys didn't do a good job?

Did they do anything other than mount it once and add weights? If it were that far off I would like to know what is out of balance, the rim or the tire. Normally you would break the bead and rotate the tire on the rim 180* to see if it balances out. Is the wheel round and trued? 3oz is a lot of weight.
I wouldn't say they did a bad job, just that they could have done more to "fix" the issue. The tube could be part of the issue also.
 
Compared to where the valve is where are the weights located? And when you had the wheels with the tires and tubes off did you ever spin the wheels to see if the rims were balanced?
 
On the rear tire, the 70g is located 180 degrees opposite of the valve.

On the front, 50g is located at 90 degrees from the valve.

I assume the seller is telling the truth, (he's been incredibly helpful so far) and he says he did true them by spinning them
 
Are they sleeved valves, meaning do they a chrome sleeve covering the threaded section? Did you watch them when they installed the tire on the rim? They could have tried to rotate the tire on the rim a second time in and effort to see if the tire had a light side so they could install the light point of the tire at the valve point.

If you are unhappy with the appearance, remove the weights and buy some dynabeads and place 50g worth in the front and 70g worth in the rear. The beads will behave like the weights, but you won't see them as they will be inside the tube.

Or you could pick up the equivalent weight in spoke weights and place them opposite the valves, http://www.aerostich.com/re-usable-wheel-spoke-weights-8-pack.html They look nicer than stick on lead weights as well.
 
I was not there for the installation. My guess is that they didn't give a crap and called it a day.
 
How much is too much? Any add on weights not installed at the factory. The shop got lazy. I wouldn't send a tire out if it needed weights added, I'd break it down and either get it properly set, or grab another tire of the shelf and mark the first try CULL on the carcass in indelible ink.

None of that made sense. What would you do with all those tires that need weights then, most do. Seldom do you get a tire that is perfectly balanced from the factory. How do you know it's the tire causing the imbalance? What is CULL? Turning the tire on the rim helps sometimes but only if the tire and the wheel are out of balance. If one or the other is balanced then turning the tire on the rim only moves the imbalance to another area.
The OP never mentioned if the tires he had mounted were new or not. If a customer brings you wheels and tires to mount do you send them away without completing the job because you might not be satisfied with how much weight is required to complete the customers request?
 
We only handled tires sold by the shops I worked at. Any that couldn't be balanced w/o a lot of weight were returned to the distributors. 90% of the tires only had to be slid a bit on the rim and they needed no additional weight.
 
The shop can check the rim without a tire....if it is in balance, there shouldn't be a lot of weights unless the tire is screwed up.
