Only real way to have perfectly smooth indents is to make them using proper metal working tools and graft them into the tank.

Mark out the knee indents with a paint pen making sure both side are exactly the same size and shape.
Cut them out using the finest/thinnest cutting tool you can get your hands, on and then swap sides with the peices you have removed.
Now the peice from the right side of the tank is welded in its inverted position into the left side of the tank and visa versa. Hey presto, knee indents. File back welds, bondo and shape to suit. A lot quicker and neater than bashing it with a hammer.![]()

Let's say you used a piece of tube to draw a circle on the tank, it would need to touch all the way around the perimeter to work, if for what ever reason, you don't have contact in a certain area, that area will not be a perfect fit on the opposite side.
