Hammering-in knee indents into a stock tank?

What type of tools would be used to hammer in knee indents into a stock CB500 tank or any tank for that matter?

I used this hammer I got at harbor freight



And this is the result



Make sure you have everything planned and symmetrical on both sides, using a pattern.
Then start in the middle and work your way out. Use the big end for the main denting and the small end for defining the edges.
Lastly you don't need to wail on the thing just firm blows and take your time. Honestly it took me about a half hour to do both sides. You can go back over it with the big end and smooth it a little and even things up.

If I wanted to do this to a bare steel tank like yours, can I use some sort of finer metal-working hammers to smooth out the nasty dents the mallet makes? I want to have a steel tank in the end.

Basically... No.

Only real way to have perfectly smooth indents is to make them using proper metal working tools and graft them into the tank.

My buddy used a mallet to make his just fine without grafting.. He just went in later with some bondo over the dents, sanded it, smoothed it out and painted it and it looks great! But I don't know if anybody else wants to go through that trouble.

The OP wants bare metal, and that much filler on a tank WILL eventually crack and break.
 
I planned on filling and painting mine but after looking at it I like the bare metal and the texture of the hammer marks in the tank so I am going to paint the rest of the tank but only clear coat over the knee dents.

Some might like it some might not but its my bike and I am building it so I get to say what goes :D
 
I've done a tank in a similar fashion. I was able to get it fairly smooth using a small ball peen after the rubber mallet. Then a little body filler (probably 1/8 inch) and it looked good.
 
If you have acess to a tig or a friend with one this idea might work for you.

Mark out the knee indents with a paint pen making sure both side are exactly the same size and shape.
Cut them out using the finest/thinnest cutting tool you can get your hands, on and then swap sides with the peices you have removed.

Now the peice from the right side of the tank is welded in its inverted position into the left side of the tank and visa versa. Hey presto, knee indents. File back welds, bondo and shape to suit. A lot quicker and neater than bashing it with a hammer. ;)

It does sound clever, although I'm not convinced it would work unless you had a uniform shape (sphere)

True... The cut has to be precise and has to be cut at the same exact spot on either side of the tank or the shape won't fit. Still love the thinking around this though!

That way does work. A lot of guys on this forum have had success with that method.

Would love to see some pictures! I have the means to make perfect shapes via Adobe Illustrator... I am a graphic designer and can even stick the shapes to the tank with wax (while cutting). I would love to try this.
 
I have a Flux-Core welder. Wondering if the bead would be thick enough to join the pieces... And I'm sure the pieces can be cut out with a jigsaw.

I would think the cut would have to be on the same plane... Let's say you used a piece of tube to draw a circle on the tank, it would need to touch all the way around the perimeter to work, if for what ever reason, you don't have contact in a certain area, that area will not be a perfect fit on the opposite side.

I agree. Your X and Y axis AND your angle can't be off.. maybe just a mm. Who says the tank is even symmetrical before cutting? It can be done. It's worth a try, but a $200 try at that.
