Harley Davidson Cafe Racer?

Just read a PM from Swivel the drivel regarding my comments, according to him Vincent motorcycles were crap and it's only foggy memories that make them seem like great bikes, the fact that they broke many records seems to have passed him by, a 1948 Vincent kicked out 55bhp and 125mph on standard fuel or 100bhp on racing methanol. The Vincent remained unequalled by a production motorcycle into the seventies, yes I'm sure you can pick faults with them, as you can with any other machine, but these bikes were built before most of us were born, and probably some of our fathers too.
He also points out that he can ride a Vincent anytime he wants and that all the Vincent owners he knows are wankers, which unless he has contact with the Vincent owners club (highly unlikely) means there are a lot of Vincent owners in his area.
Swivel don't PM me any more, post your comments here so everyone can read your deluded ramblings.

He's a pretty dis-agreeable, turd. His idea seems to be, any design that predates his introduction to motor cycles or knowledge base sucks... so, cool. One less person on the market for a rad bike!

Frog. I liked you comments. I still don;t understand why a Sportster is referred to as a "girls bike". And I completely fail to understand why Swivel would refer to Vincents as crap. Phil Vincent built them to the highest standards of the time. And it has to be remembered that England (and the rest of Europe) were still recovering from a devastating war. Material was in short supply I remember reading a story about Evan Wilcox restoring an AJS porcupine tank. When he cut it open he found Nazi stampings. The factory was forced to use scavenged material from downed German planes!

For the time they were THE bike. Rollie Free and many others didn't race them because the were slow. Clem Johnson didn't drag race a Vincent because he wanted to lose. I will admit to knowing one Vincent owner and he's not a wanker. He sen me this photo some time ago. On the far right s Harry Lindsay, a long time friend, He rode the Vincent in the photo to an Irish speed record of 143 mph in 1953 (when the photo was taken). The Vincent in the photo is "Gunga Din" the works hack. It was used for testing new ideas etc. On the right is Phillip and Mrs. Vincent. If they are such pieces of shit why is it they are so friggin' expensive?

I just found the block user....Swivel , welcome! :) no more PM's from you! And he say's through pm "A damn sight closer to riding that Black Shadow again when I choose to than you..... :D" Oh... ya burned me... Ya, fuck'n retard!

Motorcycle Mojo magizine April 2011 issue have an interesting article on Gunga Din the factory works Vincent.

"Gunga Din" was a works hack/ test bed designed to be ridden hard. I have an undying hatred of "patina". That word is basically an excuse for not doing anything to a scruffy bike. But certain bikes need nothing more than a wipe with an oily rag to be just right. "Gunga Din" was one of those machines. Now, sadly, its a way over restored trailer queen.

Hey Mike, do you or anyone here, have a link or more info on this bike. I've searched and searched and can't find a thing. I found a pic at XLforum but not much else.

Thanks
Bruce

Pretty sure that's the bike Harley built to go racing WSB?
The 'bubble head' was developed from it.
Made around 160bhp, problem was, everyone else was making around 190+

Ya, the lines and proportions are all out of wack...? The fender, those "huge" side panels. The whole bike looks like it's retaining water! lol...

^^^^ Style of the day guys. Remember Egli didn't have any fixed and rigid rules as to what is cafe cool. He just built fast good handling cafes. You'll have to forgive him. That was probably his first attempt at a Harley cafe.
