Removed the stock ones from my motor and looking for HD ones as a replacement. Looking at the APE studs but nothing listed for the 400F.

Can I use ones from another model?

As long as length, thread pitch and diameter are same , studs don't care.
You can also re-tap crankcase and use larger diameter (10mm instead of 8mm)

I've been looking too but no luck. It's unfortunate people stock a lot of 550 and 750 parts but not many 400. Demand I guess.

As in the block will need retapping? Is that possible if I've had a few holes timeserted and helicoiled?

re-thread crankcase
May have to drill out stud holesin block and head for clearance, I think they are 9~9.5mm?

If they have helicoils in them you have to get those out, re drill and retap or put new helicoils back in with the new diameter..

Ballsack! Ok looks like I'll get the APE studs for the 500 and get the head retapped. Can I do this myself with the correct drill bit and and tap/die?

I don't have a tap/die set but probably worth adding to the tool box.

I don't buy complete tap/die sets, just get set of 3 the size you need (taper/second/plug)
Probably be 10x1.25.
Get HSS they last much longer than Carbon steel
You may be able to remove Helicoils and screw studs straight in, 8x1.25mm Helicoil probably uses 10 x1.25 'hole' (may be 9.8mm, I forget)

So change of plan. Only 3 of the original studs were ruined in the removal. Going to put the originals back in and look for some used good condition replacements. Saves redrilling the block and all thr shenanigans that involves.

It's not going to be a hi po engine anyway, only a 466cc kit.

Is this site legit? Seems they have engine studs brand new:
