Hello from Alabama - '53 BMW R50 and some vintage HDs and Indians

Hello, I just joined the forum. My name is Lucas and I'm from Orlando, FL but currently live in Birmingham, AL as i recently started my career as a mechanical engineer. Anyways, I grew up rebuilding vintage Harley Davidsons and Indians with my dad and currently have a spectacular collection ranging from the 1920's to 1960's and a couple early 90s bikes. Wont go too in depth into the collection bc there's somewhere around 35 bikes total of which 28 are completely restored. I will say my favorite 2 are a 1947 Knucklehead and a 1948 Panhead (pictured below).

The main reason I joined is because I will soon be inheriting a 1953 BMW R50 that my father has had in storage collecting dust for about 15-20 years. It will become my first personal project. Plans are to bring it back to pristine condition, make it run great, and do some minor OEM alterations like lower bars and a single seat. Onto some pics...

Welcome and if you need some BMW help Kanticoy on here has been restoring a few and can likely help, he is in Moody not far from Barber Motorsport park.

oh wow that's awesome! Thank you for the heads up! I'll be hitting him up for sure once I get the bike. I have to take care of paperwork and what not right now because the bike is currently in South America so I'm in the process of arranging shipment.
 
From a first glance, that BMW doesn`t need much besides a good cleaning and fluid change! Wow... I would wake up every morning and eat my Corn Flakes seated on a different bike if I was in your shoes.... unbeleivable. Welcome to the site.

Can you tell us a little about the reason your dad has been so into collecting/restoring HD`s??

Well, I was told it needed some engine work but i haven't gotten full details about what exactly yet. Hopefully it doesnt need much. Haha and yea its a pretty awesome sight to wake up to a mini museum every day! I'm incredibly fortunate my dad has had this passion and instilled it into me since very young.

Ummm basically its a generational thing. My grandpa grew up racing cars and motorcycles and restoring them as well. He had his own shop where he built everything and it passed down to my dad as well. He raced for years (cars and motorcycles) and ended up restoring '30s Fords, '50s thunderbirds, some old chevy trucks and at the same time collecting all these HDs little by little. Ever since I can remember I've had these hot rods and bikes around me and as a kid i always helped out in tearing stuff down and putting it back together. by the age of 5 or 6 i was racing BMX and dirt bikes and later on shifter karts... so i too followed in the same footsteps haha all 3 of us are mechanical engineers

well I personally did not afford those bikes haha! It's my dad's personal collection that i've just been a part of all my life and have helped in some of the restoring and what not. I unfortunately dont live with him anymore bc I moved back to the states with my mom at the age of 12 (from Colombia) so since then my involvement has mostly been when i go visit him a few times every year. Fortunately enough, this BMW has been laying around for years and bc of the HDs and Indians, he doesnt really have the full interest in restoring this one himself so i'm trying to take over it
 
btw, thanks everyone for the warm welcome so far! I'm a huge volkswagen/european car head that comes from a tight knit group of enthusiasts so its nice to get into something new with some cool people

Looking forward to drinking a beer with ya brother! But don't try drinking all the beer. If you do you will end up sleeping in some weird places like vonyinzer!
 
LOL that is a Mike thing, I fell asleep standing next to a truck at Troy's place during the first GTG. I think Yinzer fell asleep in a few odd places there too. We both like beer...... a lot.

Thanks! I actually read about the event recently and I'm super excited to go! Very hopeful that I have the bike by then so I can bring it to the event. Either way really looking forward to going
