Hello from Dayton Ohio

bad assed, super fast and fully gassed
My name is Joshua Pipes and obviously i live in Dayton, Ohio, though i've lived just about everywhere out west for most of my life. I started riding dirt bikes when i was barely strong enough to pull the clutch lever in and have been riding something ever since. I've always been a big fan of the vintage britt and japanese bikes, but love everything with two wheels and way too much power for a sane person. I learned at an early age how to work on most bikes, though there are a few out there i've never touched...the Desmodromic Duc's come to mind...scary. Having a pretty good idea how to make just about any old snotter run, over the last 8 years I started tinkering with building my own cafe bike ala Steve Carpenter's SOHC CB's. My first real attempt was a 76 CB550F SS. I paid $450 to a guy whose wife wanted the "death trap" out of her garage. It was a runner. Switched it over to pod filters, 4into1 header and clubmans and I had my first cafe bike. Unfortunately, I had never learned how to fabricate, and still to this day i struggle with it. So she was pretty bone stock as far as the tank and seat went. But i didn't care. She ran like a scalded dog. About a year later, the fuse block gave out. I rebuilt it, but shortly after that the dry rotted wiring started to give out here and there. I got her running again and then sold her for twice what i paid for it. I still kick myself in the arse for that! My next thoroughbred was a 78 CB750. I bought it pretty much stock, though the gent whom owned prior had fitted it with a Jardine 4into1 that simply screamed. That 500 pounder lasted a couple years before i got bored with it. It was hot, but she handled pretty heavy too. After a time of research I settled onto my current ongoing project, a 77 Suzuki GS750B. A big DOHC as well but still a tad lighter than the CBs and a better handling bike all around. Early on Suzuki and Kawasaki decided that Honda had the market on dead reliability, so they did the next best thing, making their bikes faster than anything out there at the time. And the GS750 was the cream of the crop for a couple years. It had the popular and sexy lines of the CB's but the raw bad ass horsepower of the Kaw influenced powerplant. The mix made for an excellent handling, extremely powerfull bike. With that in mind, coupled with the fact that it's fairly similar design of the CB made for, in my mind, the perfect choice to build my ultimate personal cafe racer. While still a work in progress (I havent settled on a tank design yet, and frankly, I'd like to learn to make it myself) it's well on it's way to being the bike of my dreams.
While doing all this for myself, and learning as I go, and seeing the popularity of the style grow (was it ever not popular?) it occured to me that I might start building these bikes for sale. I mean if OCC can build choppers as an art, then why not a cafe bike?? And, in my opinion, they're a hell of alot meaner! Lets see em pull one of those two wheeled land yachts thru a hairpin HA! I don't plan to retire from doing this, as I have a decent job that I happen to enjoy, but it's a passion that I cant ignore and its a good way to let it out. Plus, someone else can get pleasure from the amazing looking and fantastic running machines. Unfortunately, while the popularity of vintage bikes have grown, so have the prices. So currently i have a couple of Yamaha XS's (good old vertical twins sound great) as my starter bikes, as well as a Kaw KZ440. They're not for me, as im a rather tall guy and they feel like mopeds under me, but they sure are fun to flick back and forth! My plan is to have at least one of them up for sale by spring, so if you're interested let me know!! They'll not be as damn sexy as Carpy's CBs, but they won't cost 8grand or more either, and still look damn good.

So that's me, if ya have anymore questions, just ask! It's a pleasure to be part of the DTT forum! TON UP!!!

Welcome Josh!!...
Cant wait to see some pics of the rides!!...
How did you find us?

Cheers

Lets see some pics!!! At least of the Yammies. I'm in the process of building an XS400 cafe. Already did up an XS650 (non-cafe) for more of a distance/cruising bike. So, if you need any parts for either, let me know. I'm also 6' 5" and getting up there in weight. The 400 does feel a little small, but the beauty of building a bike is that you can build it to fit you. It should be a pretty fun short run bike. As it sits, it weighs about half what the 650 does, and the 650 will do a ton (a little scary on these old bikes). Since you have an 80's 400, is it the dohc with the 35mm forks? You should have a few more ponies than my sohc and it'll be easier to find parts and clip ons for 35mm forks compared to my 33's. It's definitely good fun building these old bikes. A lot of people look at me like I'm crazy when I bring another free old wreck home. One man's trash is another man's treasures. I've got 4 bikes in the man-cave right now........ gettin a little tight with engines and boxes of parts laying everywhere, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

I'll be puttin some pics up soon, i just gotta gets some batteries for the cam. (where the hell did i put the cord for it too??lol) No, it's still SOHC. I bought the thing at a garage sale for (get this) $75. Took it home hooked a battery up to it and got it to start by blasting it with starter fluid...didn't run without it tho. It had been stored with a little gas, unfortunately. But as of now, i've cleaned out the carbs (man they were snotted) and petcock, and completely drained and flushed the tank. Put the carbs back together and slapped em on with a temp fuel bottle, kicked it over and she fired up and ran on choke in one kick. I was pretty happy with that. Sadly, as soon as you roll on some throttle or take the enricher off she croaks. SOOO i think i have some jetting issues in the slow speed circuit somewhere.... for everything I CAN do with a motor, Im still needin help with the carbs...i have a good idea of whats wrong, they just frustrate me so. She runs smooth as silk on choke tho, so thats promising. I can smell gas bad and the plugs are black and wet so Im sure that shes way rich. If its not the pilot fuel and air jets its probably the floats. I had one float needle that was really scuzzed up but i got it to move a bit so i gave it a shot. I have ordered a new set cos im sure that is part of the problem. We'll see when they get here. As far as the 650, I havent even touched it yet. I got it for $250 from a buddy of a buddy (he had a 76 Z1 i wanted REAL bad but couldnt justify the 3 grand tag on it.) The Yammi has compression and the carbs look to be in clean condition but i really havent messed with it. Right now I'm still balls deep in my GS750 (man it's gonna be the cats ass if i do say so my self, cant wait to get pics up to show you guys) and I'm currently tracking down an electrical prob in my KZ400...I hate electrical probs.....*sigh*

Say Rudy, does your XS400 use the Mikuni VM34 carbs?? or did you bump them up to 36's? If it's the 34's what's the jet and needle set you are running? I'm hoping that these new float needles and adjusting the floats will solve my problem, but if not, i may need a little help on the carbs for it.

I have two sets of the stock 34s. I pulled the set I plan on using apart and they looked brand-new-clean (bonus for me!!!). I remember looking at the jets and needles, but can't remember what they were. I can check for you tomorrow. As for help with them, I'm no carb guru, and I'm still learning. I got lucky with the 650 that they were tuned fairly well already, though they'll need some tweaking again soon. I'm sure I'll need to do some changing on these carbs as I'll be running straight pipes and pods.

If you need some parts, give me a shout. I have a parts bike with a lots of stuff on it that I got for the price of..... FREE!! Ya can't have the motor though, thats for a spare....... or, maybe a shifter kart. Who knows. ;D

Thanks man!! I will surely keep that in mind...Fortunately as far as stock goes this 400 is in pretty damn good shape for a 75 dollar bike. VERY little rust and even the 2into2 megs and pipes are clean (little surface scratched but what the hell) I do need the bottom washers for the bar bushings but im betting i can pick up a replacement at the hardware store. If not i may hit you up for those if you have em. I want to cafe this bike, but on the other hand i have that 650 to mess with too, and I'm just not sure i could get what i put into it out of it since it's a smaller bike. True cafe fans would be interested, but unfortunately it's a small small market around here. People ask what kind of bikes im into and i tell them and they look at me like im speaking in tounges. "You mean it aint a Harley? Well fuuuuuck that mane" heh but so goes it. I think i might have better luck just getting her cleaned up real good and selling her to someone who appreciates her stock instead of dumping a bunch of money into it. While it would be a good practice base, I'll never ride her (way too small for my 6'4 260lbs ass) I dunno man im kinda torn. What do you think? Tonup the 650 or try the 400 for fun?

Hey rudy thought you might be interested in this....While its not doing it yourself...its some good ideas or a place for parts..

Sorry I haven't checked the jet sizes yet. I know, it's been like a week, but I haven't been around much, or I've been busy getting ready for the fast approaching Canadian winter as the car will be the only mode of transport when the snow flies. I'll remind myself to check for you tonight. *Puts reminder in cell phone* I've ordered a Mikuni tuning guide book, so when that comes in I hope to be a little closer to a carb guru and can offer sage advice.

75 bones!?!? Thats pretty decent. I paid 350 for my good one. Exhaust wasn't bad, might use it to pass safety if the mech gets concerned about noise. These bikes are EASY to work on, so making it into a cafe would be a breeze for you. Parts are cheap and easy to get if you know where to look. Most things can be fabbed up easily enough too. The thing is, these bikes aren't worth a whole lot of anything even stock and in real nice condition. I've seen mint ones with low milage going for about $500. So, I guess its a bit of a toss up. Spend a little extra cash on it and maybe get a little more out of it, or spend your time and money elsewhere. A cafe 400 could be a great bike for a kid in high school or college that can't quite afford getting a crotch rocket yet. Sometimes selling your bike means a little marketing, find out who your target demographic is and advertise accordingly.

I've got two sets of them washers if you can't find anything. I'm not using the handlebar mounts at all, just getting plugs turned to fill the holes.

The 650 will get you decent coin as they're a pretty popular bike and it's not hard to find someone who is looking for one. But they're worth a fair bit stock to the right people. If it's a standard in restorable condition, I'd say restore it. Just my 2 cents.

My theory exactly. $10 000 insurance on a crotch rocket just isn't in my budget :D i like cafe bikes better anyway!

OK, just got home, checked the jet sizes. Mains are 127.5 and pilots are 170 (at least thats what I understood from what I could see). I could check the other set too, just to make sure. That'll be a job for tomorrow as I'm on the road again in about 5 hours. Hope this helps you out Josh.

Thanks rudy! That was kewl of you to check that out for me. I appreciate it. I got the next couple of days off so ima tear back into those carbs one of em and see whats the deal. I have a feeling my slow speed circuit is the culprit, prolly still clogged on the one side, and hopefully my new float needles get here tomorrow. I got some new rear shocks to put on my Zuk too. I had a guy cut and weld a set to slam it but i think i went a hair to far with it..lol my arse is broken..lol AND (drum roll please) i got batts for the digicam so i'll have some pics up in the next couple of days too :) woohoo!! lest you all think i aint got shit..haha

No problem Josh. I checked the other set, they came in at 132.5 Mains and 042.5 Pilots. The 170 I told you before for the pilots was something completely different, dunno what I was thinking, so just forget about that number. I don't know which one is stock size. If I had to guess, I'd say the 132.5/042.5 combo as that bike was bone stock and the carbs looked like they hadn't been touched, ever. The others the PO had them apart cleaned them, replaced one and tried to get the bike running with no compression in one cylinder. Doesn't work all that well last time I checked. Anyway, I'm waiting on the very edge of my seat to see these pictures you speak of!
