Hi guys, i've been lurking on this site and a couple of others (KZrider) (650rider) collecting ideas and inspiration for my own projects. i've got 2 bikes in storage back in MN, but i'm looking to pick something up on the cheap here in AZ to putt around on.
I guess my main thing right now, is wondering if anyone on this site is Also from AZ, I'd like to meet up with others that can appreciate a bike that doesn't have a Vtwin, monster stretch and rake and some crazy easter egg paint job, or someone who appreciates the fun you have when you call a local bike shop and they tell you they cant get you a part more than they can, or you work on your bike not only for the enjoyment but for the lack of a qualified mechanic who is willing to even look at it.
i've been hunting C/L the last few weeks and have some money saved up, i'm looking for a small bore (smaller than 650CC) japanese bike to build out, not looking for an all out speed machine, just something i can start practicing M/C fab on so when i get ready to move back to MN, i can confidently tear into my XS650 and my KZ900.
i'd be really interested in reading more about putting modern inverted forks, bigger disc brakes, what problems people run into when running dual disc front and disc rear on a bike that was originally drum brakes. guys that are changing out ignition systems, rebuilding their motors and transmissions, bracing the frame etc... i'm making crazy excessive use of the search button.
thanks ahead of time for the help you guys seem more than glad to dole out to members of this forum as i am sure i will receive plenty of it in the future here. i have little to no experience painting or building with fiberglass, but i am more than capable of doing metal work (welding, sheetmetal fab, etc) looking forward to getting started probably next month and cant wait.

so, alright guys... i totally scored today when i was out riding my Kawasaki (i included a pic) up to a good friend's house. i was up there to help him fix his 96 chevy pick up and his 92 bobcat skid steer (both with ignition issues) we were out on the porch in rocking chairs bullshitting and watching the horses in the frnt 40 and he starts asking about my KZ900, how long i had it, how much work i've done to it... long story short he mentions off hand if i am interested he has some old jap bikes that have been parked since 1979 behind his shed.
so i bite, i go take a look and i score big for $50 bucks.
(what i am guessing is) a 1965ish Yamaha YDS3C 250CC two stroke
A 1974 honda CB350
a 1970's-ish Honda 750honda-matic
the yamaha is bad, its an ex michigan bike that has a completely rotted seat pan (but still in shape enough to build a template for a new seat) its missing a lot of parts from the looks of it and will need a full on frame up restoration. i'm really leaning on caffeinate-ing it, and replacing it with a newer front suspension.
the CB350 is definitely going to be built for the ton up ride. its in slightly better shape but the seat is shot, and the motor will need to be stripped down, along with the rest of the bike. all the body panels are there, the seat pan is there (seat is long gone, stray dogs love seat foam aparrently)
i'm probably going to sell the honda-matic. no interest in it really except maybe the tank. its very wide and boxy (manx-ish)
