Hello from Toronto

Hey guys.

Been poking around the site for over a week and thought I should introduce myself. I'm not from Toronto, I'm actually in Oshawa right now for school but Toronto is where people would know. I'm 22 and I am new to motorcycles. Never had more than a minibike growing up as a kid since I lived in Haliburton (cottage area) and my dad felt safer with me riding 4wheelers. I wanted a street bike once I got my license but my mother wasn't having it. So instead I bought a sports car and have been doing that ever since.

I'm seriously considering building a bike after I finish my current car project. I am interested in the Yamaha XS bikes for a couple of reasons. I like the lines and the have a lot of Yamaha brand loyalty from riding snowmobiles. Also, my father had a few Yamaha street bikes growing up and worked at a Yamaha dealer in Markham. I believe one of the bikes was a 650 but would have to double check.

I think I am most interested in an XS400. I need the bike to be cheap to build/ride/insure since I am the wrong age and a University student with expensive hobbies. I also like the idea of having a bike that is hard to get into trouble with. A safer beginners bike. After I get bored and want something new I can always buy a bigger one and increase the collection. lol

Anyways, this forum is great and an excellent resource/inspiration. I hope I can add another story to the cafe section of the forum.

James

Also, a few shots of my current project that is standing between me and the bike I want to buy.

Welcome James! ;D

Nice wheels! ;D You'll do well with any XS machine. Don't ignore a deal on an XS650 though!! If you can find one at a good price, snap it up! 8)

Don't be a stranger! ;)

Welcome aboard!!..

Man!!... LOVED the supra when I was in highschool!!...
I particularily lusted for the Celica/Supra what was a generation earlier to the one you have!!..

Get a bike!!.. its a different thrill!!... more addictive

I actually have one of those as well but it is in rough shape. A friend of mine also has an 84 Celicasupra that we swapped a non turbo 7M into. Been doing the Supra thing for about 6 years now. Don't want to stop but I want to add another hobby. Bikes seem to fit that bill.

Thanks for the welcomes guys. You will see more of my posts around here as I search for more information.

Did some insurance shopping today and found out some interesting things. If I went and got insurance tomorrow on an XS650 it would be 2428 a year. If I got a 400 it would drop $134 per year. If I were a year older and still had only an M1 I would be quoted $1200. This tell me that I can get a 650 and not worry about the rates being significantly higher than a 400.

I'm sure you are all taken back by how expensive that is, however, I am 22 with 2 speeding tickets. I currently don't even have my M1. My plan at this point is to take my M1 in the spring and do a rider training/M2 exit later in the summer. I will buy the bike some time over the summer and take it apart to build the bike. Then, the following summer I will be older and in a new insurance bracket and I will have had my license for a year. Then I can get cheap insurance and enjoy riding.

I'm just happy that I can add a few more bikes to my shopping list.

Dude, move to Alberta. My 79 CB750K costs me about $140 a year. Ive had my license less than a year and got my full license in less than two months.
