Before I go off an drop a few bills to a mechanic...I wanted to get your experts' opinions on the root of my issue:
About a month ago, I moved from Arizona to Texas w/ my partial cafe CB500. In Arizona, the bike handled like a champion. The first day I moved to Texas, I took the thing out for a night spin on the town. It handled great for about 45 minutes...but when I went to take a turn, engaged the clutch and was attempting to downshift -- it completely died.
After about 5 minutes of tinkering, I got it to start back up...but 5 minutes later -- the same thing happened.
Now, its an issue getting the thing even started...but it does start...However, after 10 minutes, the same concurrence happens -- I engage the clutch or the rpms drop and it dies...the pipes were coughing and black smoke was spitting out, so i figured it could be gunked up carbs...
The carbs hadn't been cleaned in quite some time, so I cleaned them this morning....still...no go...I can get it out of my housing development, but after that, the pipes start to cough...then it dies.
The thing starts, idles, and then just dies....OR....it starts, idles, I pop it into first and start trying to get out and it dies...
It sounds like its flooded...but its not...(don't know if that aids in an assessment).
I don't know exactly where to pinpoint the problem (I will wholeheartedly admit I am not mechanically inclined)...I'm wondering if you all had any ideas?
Could it be the dramatic change from the dry AZ heat to the humid Texas climate? If so - WTH do I do?
Could it be something as simple as a spark plug? If so, how would I be able to tell?
Do I just need to get the carbs re-synced due to the humidity?
or...am I completed effed?
I've been trying to manipulate the problem, but it seems like each time I get the thing to start a different tinkering seems to kill it; choke full bore one time and it kicks over and runs before it dies. Repeat, and it doesnt even start. Choke completely off, and it starts, then dies...
I'm literally at a loss as is my buddy who "knows about bikes" (i called him a buddy...not a mechanic)
Any indication of what you think could be the problem would be tremendously appreciated.
