Honda CB360 Engine Swap

Originally I was thinking of upgrading to a CB750 or an XS650 to make into a bratsyle bike, but bike prices here in Houston are ridiculous. Now I am looking to up the power in my CB360. Looking at rough dimensions it looks like a XS650 motor would be able to squeeze in there with a little cutting and welding. Any other suggestions on what motors to look into swapping? Any other reasons not to do a swap like this?

The CB360 will not likely be strong enough for a larger engine. They are pretty flexoble as is.

I saw someone swap and XR600 engine in and it was supposed to be a close fit... Here's the link: http://www.hondatwins.net/forums/1-project-logs/9003-bare-metal-cb360-custom-tracker-brat-5.html
Making sure your frame is strong enough to handle the extra power is probably a good idea while you're at it.

Thanks for the link and info that is a seriously cool bike and making me want to do something similar that much more. I am a mechanical engineer so I can plug the frame into the computer so see where it is weak. The only hard part would be knowing the tubing thicknesses of the bars. Anyone know where I could find those without sectioning a frame?

Not sure on that one. Are you planning on chopping the subframe? I'd assume the thickness there would be the same as the rest of the frame, and would probably be an easy way to find out. Or find someone who has it chopped up. I'm a mechanical also, where are you studying?

My CL350 frame is cut apart.
The lower tube measures 1" OD and 0.08" thick.
Not sure if the frames are the same.

I'm trying to chop as little as possible and still make whatever engine fit. I just graduated from Cornell University last jan. What about you?

Ok, that sounds like a reasonable assumption for the rest of the frame for now. By lower tube you mean the ones under the engine? If you end up cutting any of the other bars during your project I would be interested to know their thickness as well.

Thanks for the help guys, hopefully this project will happen.

Congrats man! I am currently at Cal Poly SLO.

Oh sweet, I'm from AZ and Cal Poly was at the top of my list of places to go. I was actually going to go there, but was told it usually takes 4.5+ years to graduate because its hard to get into all the required classes. They have a pretty sweet campus and the location is badass.

Yeah, the class situation is pretty bad here. The mechanical program is really good about making sure you get all of the major classes you need (at least up to the point I'm at) but the support courses and GE's can be next to impossible to get unless you have an early registration "rotation." The whole system is messed up, and just randomly gives you a date to register regardless of your credits or academic standing. I'll most likely be there for over 4 years with how it's going right now. But, at least it's a nice place to spend an extra couple of quarters! ;D

Yes, this was the lower frame rails that run under the engine and loop back up to the rear shock mounts.
The 350s have a stamped backbone and down tube. A little different frame design than the 360s. I can't confirm that this is the same tubing size Honda used on the 360s.
