HOW CAN I FIX THIS? (TANK)

Hey everyone! I have no idea how to fix my tank.

I have a 1980 Honda cm400t that I don't really want to put a lot of money into. It currently looks ok; although, I think the previous owner just did a rattlecan paint job; the tank has a small area near where it meets the seat that has a bit of rust. There is dampness in that area and the smell of gasoline which makes me think it's rusted through at least enough to cause a small hole/crack. I'll post pictures below.

If anyone knows how I could fix this it would be appreciated. I do plan to have the tank painted (a similar color to the red/burgandy that it is currently, but more) professionally once I fix a few other small cosmetic issues.....

It's rusted through - which means it's had water inside the tank for some time. Once you start prodding around you're probably going to find a million other holes.

Probably easist / cheapest to get another tank off eBay.

Thanks! guess I now have to determine which tanks will fit the frame unless it is only cm400t 's from the same year.

Tank seal kits are good for rusty tanks, but don't trust them for tanks that are rusted through. Your only real safe and cost efficient route is to replace the tank.

You can have it welded as long as its not too big of a hole. You will have to have the inside of the tank sealed afterwards...just had the same issue with a Jawa tank. You can take it to radiator repair shop to have the work done. FYI I also have a cm400 tank and matching side covers if you're interested. The tank is missing the gas cap. Both tank and covers are in great shape. Came off of a 79. I actually have a bunch of cm400 parts if you need anything else. Let me know if you're interested. Good luck!

I repaired a gs750 leaky tank it was tricky all the soft spots blasted thru....i just filled it with water and went to town with the mig then sealed it

For the amount it would cost for a shop to fix the tank you could get another one.


OK if you can do it yourself, but if not then just buy another one.

I brazed a few holes in my 750 tank to seal up those nasty pinholes.
