How do you clean a motor before painting it?

Hey JRK I upgraded my aircompressor I have one of those with two long cylinders and has a two cylinder compressor motor its 8 cfm @ 100 psi. Will that be strong enough for the 20 harbor freight sandblaster? Will google around to find a booth DIY.

ahhh now that i do not think... i have a 35 gallon i use at 150 psi... even that gets weak... i say screw it man! try it! even if you have to let it keep filling it cost you nothing to wait for it to fill... alot cheaper than paying someone to do it... ill be building my blast booth soon as well.. the little one is not cutting it any more and i have a buddy that wants to buy it!

nope but reg sand is way to harsh... you want to use sand then use a black dimand fine sand... i use Alum oxid on alum motor parts... i powder coat and shells will create outgassing issues so i stay away from them... if you paint then shells will be fine

Thanks CCRider that is one slick set up definately gonna use ur idea. So is it the size of the tanks you think is small or the PSI to week JRK? I've always had a hard time understanding compressorS and wether I need high PSI or large tanks. I was real happy when I got this one. Its an ETQ.

PSI is going to be the big issue... the size of the tanks just mean you will get about 3 min of spray time then have to wait for it to fill again. you can always get larger tanks though, just run a line to fill them...

CC i love that f'n booth! i may do the same! i have a ton of paint left over so i can paint it to match the booth in the garage!

Guys,

I got fed up with blasting in my driveway, the neighbors did too, so I went looking for a cabinet. If you like making your own stuff, then check this out, made from a 55 gallon drum! Not big enough for a frame but you could do wheels, engine parts, etc. in here:

That oil drum cabinet gave me an idea. I've got a orange traffice barrel outside in a shed, don't ask me how it got there. It's plastic but it's very tough. Stick a piece of plywood on the end, make a window out of some plexiglass I have lying around and then do something for the gloves. hhhmmm. I was thinking about picking up one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=37025
Anybody have anything to say about it?

I think the drun would work great man! never seen that hopper, be nice to take that and have it so it funnels back into the hopper! cool idea man! take pics as you build it!!!

I think I just might do it. I was planning on waiting a while ($) before I built a blast cabinet but I think I could get this thing going for less than $50. The only problem is that the aircompressor I have now is a 220volt. My father said he'd help me hook up a 220 outlet, we already have the stuff, it's just a matter of getting around to it. I'm going to go check that barrel out right now.

Joe,

You're reading my mind!!! I was also thinking about building a funnel at the bottom to recirculate the media. I'll keep you posted on my progress. There's a guy a few miles away that sells used drums of all types, stopping by tomorrow to see what I can find. I'll make sure I don't get one that was used to ship peanut butter! ;D

BTW great work on your TX400 build!

funny, i was just showing my brother the v rod frnt end you did with the buell set up... asking what he would think if i did that on my next cafe... got two big thumbs up!!!
pumpkin if you have a 220 and get the media blaster going, find an old elect oven and get an eastwood hobby kit..y ou can start to lay your own powder brother!

You can use a tornado separator to seperate the media from the waste. I'll look for the plans. It separetes the heavy media form light .

I just looked out in the shed. The traffice barrel has a bunch of holes in it but there's also two 55 gal drums out there. One's got a pump on it, who knows what's in it. The other's got a tarp filled with what looks like bark mulch. The tarps all torn up, I think that some kind of rodent's living in there. Fuck it, I can find a place to put that stuff. So I should have a drum to use.

JRK, don't get me started on powder coating man. I've still got to get a mig welder. Rmember, I'm a poor, unemployed college student. I have really got to get a job. I have to make run to home depot tomorrow or today to pick up some lumber to modify my bed, I think I'll pick up whatever supplies I need for this blast cabinet as well. It shouldn't be much.

Col,

Good luck with the barrel. If you look closely at the top of the barrel, it's one with a removable lid, cut and hinged for easy access. This would make it very easy to get parts in and out and you don't have to go to the trouble of cutting the lid off.

The barrel doesn't have lid on it. I guess I'll make one from plywood. I think I can definitely keep it below $50 even with the cost of the blaster.
