How to get a salvage/rebuilt title in TX

Hi everybody, I just acquired a 1975 CB360 with a salvage title. The previous owner had been in an accident with it and the subframe got bent a bit. He works in a metal/welding shop so he fixed all of that up but he didn't go for the rebuilt title because I suppose he didn't need it in NM to get it on the road. Thing is, I'm in Texas and in order to register it you need to transfer it to a rebuilt/salvage title. I've been reading up on the forms I need to get him to fill out and everything but I was wondering if anyone had any experience getting this done in Texas or anywhere in the states really.

Never done it here, best option would be to get some real answers from someone that knows, person that works at your DMV. What happened to the original title? Just because it was wrecked doesn't mean it automagically gets a salvage title.

I do know Texas has a bonded title process that can get you one, that's been documented somewhere on here before. May just have to loose that title and start over, if it wasn't titled in TX it might be faster that way.

His Insurance totaled it and he had to get it branded as salvage. After a hefty hold time though I was able to get a checklist from the dmv that I'll post up here when I get to a computer just in case anyone in the future runs into this.

Here's the important bits from the email the DMV sent me:

"Your first step is to have your vehicle inspected at any state inspection station within your county of residence. (She told me on the phone that any place that does annual vehicle inspections will do, it's not a specific type of place or inspection)

After you complete the inspection, you will submit the following items to your local county tax office:
· Out-of-state salvage title
· Title application (Form 130-u I believe)
· Rebuilt Vehicle Statement (Form VTR-61)
· Inspection certificate (provided by inspection station)
· Proof of insurance
· Current driver’s license or government-issued photo identification
· Fees:
$28 or $33 application fee (depending on county)
$65 rebuilt salvage fee
$52.75 registration fee (for a passenger vehicle) plus local county fees"

basically the same process in tennessee except the inspection must be done by a certified motorcycle mechanic who certifies the vehicle is road worthy and safe.bj

As frogman recommended, I've "lost" the title to many a bike I've registered thanks to the great state of Vermont I have no trouble picking off the bikes that go for less than they're worth because of missing titles and flipping them with fresh clean registrations.

I will say I tried the Vermont way in Oklahoma and got looked at like I had lost my mind. Went to 2 different DMV's both said the same thing, must have a title in hand or you can't get a title.

There's a process here we can go though however, which I later learned about. Takes about 6 weeks, costs about 150 bucks but I get a clean clear title.
