How to sew patch onto leather jacket?

NoobZooki

The night's on fire!
So how do you do it? Where can I get it done? How much does it cost? I just need a DTT patch sewed onto the left shoulder of my leather riding jacket.

Any craft store can hook you up. Also, a dry-cleaner that does alterations should be able to throw it on pretty quick. Shouldn't cost more than 10-20$.

Well DUH! Why didn't I think of that? I'm gonna visit my dry-cleaner tomorrow morning. Time to show off the regional colors :) .

$10 to $20 bucks a patch! I bought a sewing machine for $100 bucks, learned to do it myself and can take pride in craftsmanship. Its really not hard to learn to do, and you can buy a leather gauge needle for a few bucks if you can borrow someones machine.

Simply words of encouragement to go out and do it yourself instead of paying someone else to do it.

$5 bucks a patch at a shoe place is possibly more cost effective then buying your own tool to do the job. However, if you have multiple jackets with mulitple patches, buying your own machine can more then pay for itself.

I have to disagree that a cloth machine can not handle leather. Patches to a leather jacket, no problem at all, with or without a leather gauge needle. Thick leather to thick leather, depends on the machine, but I did some testing and mine pulled thru just fine.

Check out my recent post for results...but as they say, results may vary. ;D

Hmmm, well honestly, I've never tried. Not with a modern machine anyway. I attemted to sew one on with my old Singer, circa 1950. Its a home/lightweight model. The results were less than satisfactory.Broke two needles, and my lines weren't exactly strait. But newer machines might be up to the job.

A shoe repair shop does have its draw backs. Depending on how busy they are, my shop is sometimes real quick, sometimes up to two weeks. Thats a long time when the sun is shining. Also, once i had em put a patch over a pocket and the sewed the damn pocket shut. Still, the results are much better than I could do at home.

step one get in car, step 2 leave patch, jacket, and $5 at dry cleaner (patched pinned where you want it), step 3 come back next day to get it :)

I would love to get myself a Singer. But I would hardly ever use it :-\ .

Didn't get to go today as I don't have a car and only my bike. And so far, my bike is currently down because of a broken float bowl drain screw.

Next week! I will go. :)

I did it! Excuse the messy bed ::) . Borrowed a friend's sewing equipment. Did all of this by hand in my room. Used a needle for leather then some kind of string for leather... Can't remember their actual names. But it is on very tight and will not be falling off ;D . Took me about 45 mins to do this patch :o . It's hard. Managed to poke my fingers with the needle too....

Lookin' good, man! I was glad to hear that the jacket fits well. Bummer on that float bowl issue - you haven't had much good luck lately! You must be due for a break right about now.

This jacket is so awesome! Fits me perfectly and looks cool. Thanks for giving me such a great deal :) .

The float bowl problem has been resolved thanks to Z1 Enterprises. This Monday, I'll finally be able to get to use the jacket and ride my bike after a long winter rebuilding it.

It still needs paint, a seat pad, and the electronics relocated but I just wanna ride ;D .
