so just found this site.. been lookin for somethin decent for a while. names matt. 23yrs old.. from ohio. i've been riding dirt bikes since i was 7, but i just aquired my first street bike (for free, non-running @ the time..) about 2 weeks ago. it's a 81 yamaha xs400. got it running the next night.. (basic crap.. clean carbs, drain tank, battery, fuses, etc.) runs out nice.. handles, shifts, and brakes well enough.. been addicted to street riding since. ride it every day it's not pouring or something.. nothing special, but it was free, and i love it so far. gave it some "custom" paint, a new fuse block, a mirror, and a few other small things already..
i am a vw enthusiast big-time, and have owned 13 water cooled vw's most of which 92 or older.. try to always do all my own work.. the bike thing is cool, cause it's a totally different world from wrenching on cars.. kinda.. anyways i think it's already safe to say i'm a lifer w/ the street bike thing, and more specifically the vintage/ cafe style. love it.
A COUPLE of the past rides..

thanks!! yea, only problem i've run into as far as future plans w/ the look i want on the bike is i want a good looking seat setup, but i want room to put the wife on the back.. sucky situation... maybe if i find something / make something low and flat but with a little longer seat spot.. like a tracker style maybe... i dunno.. the seat on it's friggin hideous tho.. ;D

Well then.. LOL... do I have the seat for you!!..LOL...

sick. pm me what your lookin to get for it.. think it'll fit the 400 ok, or will i have to mod it alot??

Welcome Matt. Cool rides.
Keep us up to date on your mods.

I would also like to fab up a solo cafe seat, but have it easily swapped to put my two up seat back on, just in case. ;)

That's what I did... Check out my post (http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=154.0)
Not sure if it will be entirely helpful, but there may be something in there that suits your fancy.

I'd say order up an old seat off e-bay (with a good pan) and mess around with that. Then you can keep riding while you're working AND be able to switch back later. 8)

the seat off a harley night rod(new this year) is a cafe style seat but the bump is still usable as a passenger seat.

plus it is two piece seat could fad a removable hard piece and swap when need passenger.

nice dub. i had a mk3 golf a couple years ago. im diggin the mk2 jetta too. VW's are definetly a passion of mine...nice bike too

i have an 83 VW pickup right now but she's in the garage getting a heart transplant since her old one just jumped time on me and sputtered to a choking stop.

Welcome!

My Airhead has interchangable parts with the 70's VW's :D Seriously!

And nice work in that engine bay... great polish work on the headers and the cross member!

One option for the seat is to make a FG hump that slips over the back of a two-up.Use three allen-heads taped into the rail to secure it. Three twists of a wrench later you're rolling with you lady clinging to your back.

I still have my stock seat so I can swap the seats... 2 minute job on the BMW...riding two up is a great thing 8)

Imagine that bike, lowered font end, clip-ons below the tripple, back end raised, rear sets, lots of flat black rattle can paint all over the bike....It has some potential......LOL...

hahha nice.. also the rear sets would inhibit passenger riding, no?? i'd love it tho... i think i may have to end up w/ 2 bikes... lol :D
