Been Around the Block
well i have a 1964 vespa gl and one night i got the idea that i need a cafe racer so i sold one of my guns and now hopefully by the end of the month i will have a project to make into a cafe racer

i am debating between a honda cb550 and a cb750, i sat ona cb550 and was comfortable on it but i have a line ona cb750 too

is there much weight difference between the 550 and the 750, i found the weight specs and it was only about 50 or 60 pounds but is the weight noticeable, i am skinny about 120 pounds

pict of my scoot, it has a new pipe since this pict and some engine work, it was a 150 and is now a 166 with a racing clutch and pipe and electronic ignition

Who let these scooter wanks in here???

I've got a CB550. I love to pieces but for around town, I wouldn't mind something smaller. I doubt I would go for a 750 because the size difference isn't worth the power gain. I live and play downtown though. If you're out of downtown proper, might as well grab the 750 if you can. The insurance is a bit more though.

i snuck in at night ;D

thanks for the info, i am leaning heavily toward the 550, i will mainly be doing city riding :) a couple of people i talked to said go with the 550 too

lovehertz, thats a fine looking vespa, is it a GT or what model ? the only problem i have with the new scoots besides the P is the engine is on the wrong side ;D :P

wrong side!!! haha i do think motorcycles would be nicer to ride when it's cold... warm engine... mmm
it's a gts250.
i think the 550 looks sexier too.. but maybe that's just the riders....

i reckon they would be warmer too :)

Definitely the 550. I've owned a 1973 CB500K, a 1976 CB550F and a 1977 CB750K. The CB550 is the best of the bunch in my opinion. Great power-to-weight ratio, nimble handling, smaller size, cheaper insurance and the 550's transmission is better than the 500's. One of the few changes between the two models.

That being said, I'm a recent twins convert. My last bike was the 550F, which I sold and bought a BMW R75/6. I've also since gotten a 1972 XS650 which I'm in the middle of a 2 year transformation of. Twins = 1/2 the machining cost for rebuilds, 1/2 the carbs to tune/sync and easier access to things.

Don't get me wrong - the Honda SOHC4 is a bombproof easy to work on engine - especially the 500/550. The CB750's valve cover etc. can't come off the engine unless you pull it from the frame. The CB500/550 engine can be completely torn down/rebuilt with the engine in the frame - HUGE advantage in my opinion. I rebuilt my 550 engine twice.

The other nice thing about the Honda SOHC4 series is the online community at forums.sohc4.net - everything I know about Honda engines I learned there.

thanks for the help and info, im sold on the 550 now :) i wanted to hear from someone who had owned both like you :)

i would go for a twin, either british or i would love to go for a vintage ducati but my budget wont allow it :(

i had stumbled on sohc4.net, it looks like lots of good info :)

I sure hope so! That's the same boat I'm in too. Nice scoot.

The Scooters are definitely still fun to cruise around on. Here's my 74 Vespa 90. Although it feels kinda like a toy after riding my CB360 all summer.

pardon the late reply :)

very nice 90, a friend of mine in town has a 90 that he kitted out :)

how much of a leap was it going from the scoot to the cb 360 ?

It wasn't bad at all. I really didn't notice much besides the increase in performance which seems old after a week anyways. It was a big difference going back to the scoot though! It seriously felt like a toy when I drove it down the street last week. I used to own an old Suzuki GS550 a while ago so it wasn't a new feeling to hop on a bigger bike anyways.

I like that GL ya got too, sounds like it's pretty quick from what you've done to it. What does it top out at?

And brewtown....watch out we'll be settin up tents in your town anyday now! ;D
