I like the 400, but i only learned of its neglect by the aftermarket after i got the bike. Its mine thats what counts. I do have pix but im still tryin to finagle them down to size. Hopefully be up tomorrow afternoon.
Well,as far as neglect I had a Seca 400 and it was pretty much PERFECT right from the factory as stock bikes go.
They are not very powerful bikes, but mine had a top speed of around 105mph and was very stable at that speed even without a fairing.
The large dia. wheels help in this area, but honestly I wouldn't want to go much faster than that on those skinny ass tires with that tiny contact patch.
If you wanted a bike you could build up performance wise then a XS400 isn't the best choice in the first place compared to say a Honda 350/400 Four or twin.
If you want to turn it into a cafe style bike it's just like any other non-mainstream bike that the aftermarket doesn't support.
You'll have to make something fit that was made for another Cafe or race bike like a Honda,Yamaha,Norton,Royal Enfield,Ducati,Triumph etc. and/or use "universal" Cafe parts.
Hell, make some of your OWN parts(no better time to learn than the present) and then you will have the self satisfaction of knowing you built it with you own two hands.
Garage/individual built bikes are the ones that inspire manufactures to design, build and market new bikes, not the other way around.
Bike manufactures STEAL most of their ideas from people that range from being very talented/sound engineers to some goof ball nut case that comes up with a concept so silly that people will buy it!
Think about it,were bike companies the ones that came up with race bikes, choppers,Cafe bikes, bobbers, touring bikes ?
NO,they were not,but they sure a HELL jumped on the bandwagon a soon as they saw dollar signs didn't they!
Making Cafe or race/performance parts is a business and companies can't make parts for every bike made that might be turned into that style of bike.
