Ideas on getting stuck bolt out?

No quarter given, none taken.
Trying to get a headbolt out of my CB650. It's very stuck, I've tried heating the case and applying WD-40, then going to an impact driver. Now the head is trying to round off! I'm thinking the next step is drilling the head off, seeing if I can get the head and jugs off then taking a stud remover to it. Does this sound like a plan? Or am I just asking for trouble?
 
Vice grips usually work for me. Get 'em as tight as you can and then tap on the end with a hammer.
 
Try an Irwin Bolt-out - think you can get them at Home Depot, if there's one close by. The recess will need to be wide enough to get a socket into.

Soak for a couple days in kroil beforehand.
 
I have had good luck with PJs?? penetrating oil (an orange color liquid). Lay the bike on its side and let it work its way in for a day or so. Take a long socket extension and pound on the head of the bolt to jolt it. Heat helps too.

Sometimes you can get a 1mm smaller 12 point socket and hammer it onto the fastener, then try to remove it. That sometimes does the trick if everything else is exhausted.
 
The following came out of Machinist's Workshop magazine , and was given to me by a Gunsmith friend
No Oli Use........................ 516 pounds torque
WD040..............................238 pounds torque
PB Blaster..........................214 pounds torque
Liquid Wrench.....................127 pounds torque
Kano Kroil...........................106 pounds torque
ATF-Acetone mix..................53 pounds

Automatic Transmission Fluid and Acetone are mixed in equal parts, lacquer thinner can be used inplace of the Acetone but I dont think it works as quickly. This really works.

I've heard of using atf and acetone before, but didn't know it worked that well.
You'll need to heat the bolt or weld a nut to the said bolt for the expansion and contraction process to work.
 
Cool, gonna order a bolt extractor and try the ATF/acetone mix. Really don't want to try and drill the head off and get a bunch of metal shavings out of the motor. Thanks for the ideas, I'm sure one of these has got to work.
 
Best luck - for anyone else who's interested in the relative merits of penetrating oils, here's a thread from Practical Machinist in which the author of the test weighs in. I don't know that the test was particularly well-executed...or that Kroil isn't just acetone mixed with power steering fluid...

Worked ok for me on some bolts but on my rusted old oil filter I had to use a grinder to cut through the bolt. Good luck!

I can't tell you how exciting it sounds to open that link....but I think I'll pass. In fact I think I would rather open my wrist.
 
Heat the head of the hold red and melt wax around it, the wax will suck it self around the threads

I went thru this same problem a few weeks ago (working on a mower)... WD, Bolt Blaster, heat, Acetone\ATF, bolt freeze, nothing seemed to work. Finally hit paydirt when I alternated the torch and the spray freeze.... the alternating expansion\contraction did the trick... took 3 times to get it, but it was a joyous occasion when she finally broke free...
 
When using an Oxy/Acetylene torch to free up a stuck fastener, I've always had to wait until I hear that "tink" that means that the bolt has expanded enough to break the rust / cold weld / god knows what holding it in place. Sometimes it takes a shit ton of heat for a long time, which can be an issue near aluminum.
 
What Brad said^^. Heat it for awhile (doesn't have to be red hot), and then melt wax onto it. As it cools it will draw the paraffin into the threads. Have done this for a long time with severely corroded turbocharger bolts.

Also, don't destroy the head of the bolt at all costs. It is always easier to deal with a bolt that still has a head than one that's been rounded/broken off or otherwise removed...
 
Head is still on the bolt, got a Irwin bolt extractor coming. Going to use that and Brads idea. Hopefully get that stupid thing out. That damn bolt has totally halted progress on my bike. Started out with good intentions, stop the leaking maybe go for some longer rides this season. Oh well. At least this forum has got a shit load of good advice and people willing to share. Thanks. Pretty sure one of these ideas has got to work.
