"pillow talk" 73' Honda CL450
im having some issues with rearsets in the pass. peg postion because of the scrambler pipes, i was thinking of just spacing them out but what have your guys come up with?

Thanks

Click on the www part of my profile for tons of CL350 pics with rear controls. I had to cut and weld my pipes to get them to do that. With an ox-ace torch, you might be able just to bend them into that position.

Im not going to modify my pipes because they are so sex

Re: I need some advice, ideas, pics of rear sets on a honda CL with factory pipe

ive got R6 rear sets on the way so i have to figure out how to make this work without having my leg wrap under the pipes.

Spacer them outward? or maybe just make mounts farther forward then the pass. pegs where the pipes are smaller

Chris - off topic - is that the stock chaingaurd on your bike? I'll likely need something on mine to pass safety and I really like the minimalist look of yours. Also, are they the stock handlebar switch pods?

see how its hard to get a leg under the pipes in the rear where i wanna mount the used R6 "controls".
i dont mind cutting/chopping and welding but the controls are aluminum so i have to bolt them to a tab but i dont wanna lower them too much, think i could raise the pipes?heat them up with a torch and bend them upward a bit more?

maybe a bracket plate sorta like this spaced out a bit enought to get nuts behind the plate, i could weld it or bolt it to the frame. this way i could mount the R6 controls to there and have them lower and back.

i dont have photoshop yet so i used this amazing program called paint.....maybe youve heard of it.

i need to redo the rear brake some how and im worried the shifter is too close to the ground when leaning in a turn, i hate that i had to space them out.

Its wierd... it seems like the later model CL pipes you have seem to hang lower than the earlier "box" version of the CL pipes that I have on my cb450.
I have Raak rear sets on my cb450 right on the passenger pegs and I dont seem to have to "tuck" my legs under the pipes...

I think your lower pipe hangs lower than the lower pipe on my CL exhaust...

In this pic, the brake rid isnt installed, but its on the bike now and works perfect..

It just occured to me...
With the cb100f rear shocks, my back end is raised by abour 1.5 inches over stock!!...
Thats the reason why I dont have to tuck my legs around the pipes as much as you do and that explains why my exhaust looks a bit higher in position than yours!!...

Solution for ya... Get cb900f or cb1100f SHOWA shocks!!..

Well i ended up getting a set of CL pipees that were cut and welded on some EMGO shorties, this gave me alot more clearance and a mean bark. I also header wrapped them all the way to the tip because they were getting too hot on the ankle but it turns out thats not enough so next im going to unwrap them and weld on the stock heat shield, but that has come to a holt since i had to lay the bike down due to aSSHOLE pulling out right infront of me instead of stopping at the stop sign on a twisty back road. I went wide on the turn hard on the brake to avoid hitting him, hit some sand and gravel that had been kicked out into the road and the result was a snapped off peg, shift lever, scratch my new pipes and mufflers and brand new rear view mirror. Im still waitng on the shift lever to get here. oh me ....im fine just couldnt use my left leg for a day.....glad i had my leather jacket on and helmet.

Bummer dude. I've had a similar thing happen a couple years back. Glad to see you alive and kicking... well alive at least.

Did the guy stop or anything after?

Doesn't sound like the bike was too messed up... mine ended up needing a whole new front end (not that I minded much)

yeah he stopped, ran over and said sorry a bunch then i asked to use his jack handle to bend my shifter back out so i could ride it home with 1/8 of a peg.

here is the out come...

yeah i know the wrap is shit......i ran out of wrap and i bought the last one...but i was broke anyways....plus i have to change some things around with it to make the soon to be welded on OEM heat shield work and also see if i can get the pipes to come up a bit higher.
Anyways, i bought custom R6 pegs and a custom R6 shifter to replace the broken parts.
can't wait to ride again

i don't see a bracket anywhere near the end of those pipes. if you don't do something to hold them steady the pipes will break or you'll bust a studd.

behind both mufflers there are a stud on each bolted to a bracket welded to the frame, if you cant see it theni did a good job

nice. how does that seat treat you?
foam + shocks + ass = 2 straight hours of ride time but i havent gone much more then that yet, just have to make sure you stand a bit when you see a bump ;)
