il Crustico - '73 Moto Guzzi Eldorado Basket case Restoration

Looking forward to seeing it with the bags too. Bummer about the final drive, always a pain chasing down those annoying little things after redoing the whole bike.

I pulled the rear wheel and discovered that the big outer seal is the culprit for the leak. Upon inspection it looks like I may not have seated it 100%, so I gently tapped it flush.

The sealing surface on the gear is a little rough, presumably from 40 years of sitting.

I polished it up with some zona paper, oiled the seal and reinstalled the back wheel. I dumped out some gear oil while I had it on the bench and I’m out, so I’ll need to run to the store and pick up some more. I’ll clean up the wheel, tire, and everything else and hopefully get out for a ride to see if it’s fixed tomorrow or this weekend.

good luck, hope that was the issue. Chasing leaks can be a real PITA. Took us days to find a small one on Magoo's car transmission. It's the axle seal on the side we just out an new axle in. Changing that out this weekend we hope.

Drained and refilled the final drive with 360cc of fresh fluid and cleaned all the oil off the wheel and hub.

Did about 40 miles today and I don’t notice any leaks from the valve covers or final drive. We’ll see if I have any drips in the morning.

My main lighting fuse kept blowing. The handlebar switches are not the greatest design, and I suspected that was the culprit. Sure enough the horn button was grounding out on the pivot post for the headlight on/off/park switch, which has power.

I superglued some heat shrink wrap to the metal strip for the horn and filed the pivot down a bit to allow for some more clearance. Good to go.

After a long search, I finally found a reasonably priced sidecar. This was mounted to a Tonti frame Guzzi with some custom mounts so it will need to be modified for the Eldorado.

Haven’t had much time to dig into it yet but it’s in pretty great shape overall.

That thing is practically NOS compared to the stuff you usually start with haha.. I'm sure it will shine up like a diamond

If the sidecar wheel is 19" it could be from an 83 Yamaha 650 Heritage Special. Mikesxs has a s/s spoke kit.

It is a 19” and looking at some eBay pics I think you are correct. Good call! I thought it was Harley.

It took me all damn day un-hacking the cheap wixom mounting brackets I bought last year. Was not worth the $100 I saved. But I got the brackets riveted back on the saddlebags and got em mounted up.

Had to make all new posts, and adjust the rear mount bracket on the left side (cut and weld), and fill in a bunch of holes that someone drilled. Paint tomorrow.

Love the hack, Nick, and that old top case is looking great!

AND, I didn't think of this before, but do you need a rack to mount it on? I've got the one it was originally on but not sure if there's too much difference between Beemer and Guzzi to make it work. Want a pix?

Thanks, but I have a rack specifically made for this bike! Should be getting that mounted up tomorrow.

I was about to put my wixoms and brackets from the R90/6 in the "Mid-O Swap Pile", but I think I'll hang onto them. I suspect that I'll once again want to go somewhere on that bike, and since I didn't mod the subframe, they'll still bolt right up. I'll put them in the attic instead, thanks to this post! Looks great, and man I'm excited to finally see this thing in person "again".
