Installing carbs technique?

Been Around the Block
So I'm trying to re install my twin carbs in my 78 kz750 and after wrestling with them for 30 minutes I gave up. The carbs are orginal and boots are orginal. I've rocked the in and out before but it's always been a pain. Any one got any suggestions or I'm I just being a pussy?
 
Sometimes it can be easier to fit them to the carb first then on to the head spigots, presuming they are spigots. It helps to warm them up either in hot water or with an heat gun, the electric type not an open flame.

Heat gun is a good idea. My garage is pretty cold so I'm sure the boots are cold.

I don't think I can removed the boots and reinstalled with the carbs attached. I bet the heat gun will work. THanks
 
I use silicone spray to lube up the boots. Makes it much easier and also gives the old rubber a nice shine!
 
Soak the boots in xylene (available at your local hardware store by the mineral spirits and paint thinner) for a couple of days. Don't touch that shit.

Take 'em out and they'll be good as new. ...ish.
 
Second the silicon spray and the petroleum jelly, both always work nice. Silicone is a bit cleaner as dirt and dust doesn't stick to it as much as the petroleum jelly..
 
I use a small amount of washing up liquid.:)

Even if it were an easy fit, you'll want to use a bit of grease (I used bearing grease). It helps to make a better seal and lets the rubber slide a little bit as you tighten the clamps down. Obviously the grease helps with the fit when things are too tight, too.
