Is this bad?

I got this bike free, so I can't say I regret the purchase. But I had higher hopes I think. It's a 1981 Honda CB650C. After inspecting, I noticed this hole, and a couple cracks. This is my first bike is about 15 years. I've worked extensively on cars, but I've never done any work on motorcycles. I did kind of jump the gun and ordered carb rebuild kits, and an engine rebuild kit. After noticing these flaws I'm wondering if I can even work with this. What do you guys think?

That doesn't look encouraging. That's the crankcases that are broken. That said, it's not necessarily a complete job stopper.

Pop that cover off and see what the damage look like underneath. I don't think there's oil under that cover - just points or ignition system. Check it out and let's see what you are working with. Does the motor turn over easily or is it rusted solid?

Depending on what the internals look like replacing the cases is no big deal.

Empty cases are cheap, though. Here you go: http://m.ebay.com/itm/80-82-HONDA-CB650C-CB-650-CB650-ENGINE-CRANK-CASE-CRANKCASE-CASING-/222230042119?nav=SEARCH
