KZ400 Sprocket Gearing Ratio Question: 14T/41T essentially the same as 15T/45T?

Been Around the Block
Was cruising the web and found a great resource for kz400 sprockets. Thing is, they have their sunstar rear sprockets priced different according to # of teeth. The 41 tooth rear is 55% off at the moment, and thereby half the price of the 45T. The original OEM ratio of teeth for the sprockets is 15T Front to 45T back (ratio of 3.00). Is 14T to 41T (ratio of 2.93) essentially a negligible difference or is there some type of negative associated with such a change. Figured I'd ask prior to making the purchase :) can't hurt.

Also, if you have any other opinions on what sprocket setup I should be running let me know (lower or higher ratios). Also opinions on chains is helpful as I will buy a new one to mate with these new sprockets (o-ring vs non-oring, 530 vs 520, etc)

Thanks,

Adam

It's a KZ400, no need for super high strength chains, a 520 or 530 O-ring or X-ring chain would be fine. As far as sprockets, the 2.93 vs. 3.00 will not be a very noticeable change. It might be a 2-300 RPM difference. On my 750, I changed my ratio .1 and it made a difference of 400 RPM's (lower).

Appreciate the quick reply, so there really is no setbacks to a larger front sprocket to rear? Seems like most of the kz400 gearing ive found online involved keeping the 15 tooth front and instead varying the teeth count of the rear.

Good thing to keep in mind is that one tooth difference in the front is equal to about a three tooth difference in the rear. Also, Small front sprocket + Large rear sprocket = greater acceleration but limits top speed. Adversely, Larger front sprocket + smaller Rear = Greater top speed but slower acceleration.

Lowering the tooth count in the front does put more strain on the engine itself. I understand the 55% off, but if you had another option, I'd keep the front sprocket count the same, and adjust the rear if you wanted to change the ratio. But Bobdot is spot on, lower in front/higher in rear, greater accel, vise-versa, higher top end.

Turns out that the seller does not have a Sunstar brand 14T front sprocket for the kz400.

Any opinions on whether or not it is okay to mistmatch brands?

JT 14T front with a 41T sunstar rear?
