KZ400 - VM26 Jetting Question

Powderfinger

Been Around the Block
I have a 76 KZ400 with a pair of carbs from a 2006 Yamaha Banshee. They are Mikuni VM26ss

After a little work the bike starts first kick and idles fine and runs decent but is rich from 1/4 throttle up. It blows smoke (unburned fuel) ,I raised the clip to the top of the needle and it helped but it still needs to be leaner. I put smaller main jets in (115) but I have not had it out where I can really check the main.

The needle jets are 345 0-8 and the needle is 5N7, I can't find that number needle jet on a Mikuni parts list to know what direction to go. It may be made to spec. for Yamaha. It looks closest to a series 175 or 176 on this page.

Anyhow I was looking for opinions from similar set ups so I can take my best guess at ordering a set of needle jets and needles.

Thanks, Mike

I'm tuning a set of vm30s on a 74 kz400 right now, but with that much difference in size I couldn't give you any idea on which way to go.
I tried looking the needle number up in the sudco manual I have, but the only 5N number i can see is a 5N13.
I'd try Sudco, the number on the manual I have is 323-728-5407.

VM26 is a tad small for that bike a 28 or 30 would be better. I choose a VM 32 due to a great price.

Thanks guys, yeah I may call Sudco tomorrow. It looks like I need a 182 series but I don't know which one.

These carbs are on the small side but they are like new and were cheap. They can be bored to 27.5 if I want to at some point.
