Master Cylinder rebuild

Killianf1

will put pick of honda up when I have a good one
I am having a hard time finding rebuild kits for a 1978 cb 550. I find tons of them for up to 76, but haven't found one for my bike. Are they that much different between a few model years? I don't want to waste too much time waiting for parts to ship because our short summer is slipping away and I've yet to get on the road, so I want to get the right parts the first time. Any info (where to get em...if the 76 model would fit) would be much appreciated. thanks

a good way to see if it's the same is go to bikebandit.com, look up the parts list for the master cylinder for a 76, and the 78, if the parts numbers are the same then it's the same, if not... they might have a kit for the 78

thanks...yep...one number different. Now I have to decide if I'm going to drop 42 plus shipping on a new kit or just find a whole different master cylinder. any suggestions? I am on a tight budget, so I'm looking at all options. (but good brakes are kinda important)

I was told by my other forum to simply just get a new aftermarket master cylinder and save myself the trouble. I was linked to one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FRONT-BRAKE-MASTER-CYLINDER-CB400-CB450-CB550-NIGHTHAWK_W0QQitemZ140328816395QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotorcycles_Parts_Accessories?hash=item20ac3fcf0b&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=65%3A12|39%3A1|72%3A1205|240%3A1318

they are plentiful on eBay and work GREAT!

I have a 74 cb450. Will this just bolt right up with the brake lines and be compatible with the caliper?

I am bidding on that one (through my wife's account), so lets not drive the price up on each other. The guy has lots for sale, so there will be another one. :)

If I could make a suggestion. Try to see if you can get the OEM rebuild kit for it. I had made the mistake of getting a Kester kit for my CB360 and the fit was NOT acceptable. I ended up finding the OEM kit through a dealer. Im in the process of rebuilding my master cyl on my CB400F. If the cylinder is the same as mine, you can still get the OEM kit from cyclepartswarehouse.com

I ended up going a whole seperate direction. I got one from a guy who has about 10 junk bikes (he wants to start a salvage yard). Its off of a kawasaki, (650 I think...there wasn't much left of it.) 10 bucks and It seems to work just fine.

Thanks all for your help and suggestions.
