Messed up =(

Been Around the Block
Well .. i have a 73 CB350 and it has a disc brake.

So i have a complete front end with triple and everything for a 1971 drum setup.

well first step was just install the whole front end.. i didnt like how it moved, it was WAY to loose.

so i installed the hold tripple with the 1971 forks and wheel / rim. well when i went to go install the top triple... well it didnt fit with the 73 triple on the 71 forks! FUUUUUUUU =(

then tried to install the 73 triple, forks, but just the 71 rim / drum. well that fit sorta well.. but then i noticed the wheel was WAY off b/c it needs a shim or something!?

then i placed the 73 rim / wheel etc on the 71 forks and WOW did NOT FIT! so now .. scratching my head, trying to figure out what others have done and searching ends no where.

SO, what to do .. 73 bike i have both the 71 and 73 front ends. i want the drum setup on the 73.. wtf! =( pics to come soon on the errors.

Thats a little confusing........

You have the COMPLETE 71 front end, correct? I can't imagine it not bolting up just fine to the 73 frame.

Well when i put the 73 tripple to the 71 frame, the tripple wouldnt even move :( so i suspect that the 73 frame w the 71 tripple an forks are to loose. So i tried a combination of things and got to a dead end

Heres the 73 Forks with the 71 wheel and axle.

notice the amount of space. so was i suppose to use the axle from the 73 on the 71 wheel? i think i might just try again the 71 triple on the 73 bike again with the 71 forks and wheel. i just didnt like how loose, there was no "play" like back and forth or up and down.. when trying to steer it was WAY to fast. when i had the forks off the 73 with the 73 forks/triple, it didnt have as much play. BUT i cant put 71 forks on a 73 which sucks.

how are people doing the swap?

+1. You may have to get some custom size bearings for the steering tube to the triple tree post, but they're not that expensive.

=( i swaped like 10 times. grrr. i am goign to get some new greese..

ok heres a good question.. how many bearings on top should there be. and on the bottom? and where can i buy some?

Oh so now i am also thinking. should i have swapped the balls in the bearing also? are they diff in size.. i searched around and only found neck size. not the actual little tiny balls size for each year.

ok now i saw a triple setup on ebay that has different bearings. do i have the wrong one? or are these the new ones that allballs have?

The bearings in that picture are tapered bearings and are not stock - Allballs is just a brand, but these would be aftermarket bearings like Allballs or the like.

You're sort of all over the map on this.

First, help us understand clearly what happens when you put the 71 triple tree (both parts) on the 73 frame. You said something about it being loose, it being tight...

Pretty sure there should be 18 ball bearings top and bottom (maybe 19 bottom?)
Bottom yoke isn't rubbing on bottom of steering head?
Bearings are quarter inch dia, you can probably get them from a cycle shop if Honda dealer doesn't have any
You need the axle for the earlier forks wheel should be tight against fork leg as far as I remember (maybe spacer missing on right side inside oilseal?)

What i will do is go back to what i did first..

1) Take 1973 Bike, and install the 1971 Tripple + forks + Wheel (Drum setup)
Test to see if there is any play, put new bearing lube and install everything to spec.

2) Install the 1973 Tripple, forks and wheel on the 1971 bike and put everything to spec. see if i over tightened it the first time which did not allow me to steer what so ever.

What i said before sorry, was when i install the 1971 tripple, fork and wheel on the 1973 bike, it felt as if when trying to steer.. it was to loose. it turned to fast =). and the other bike it didnt move at all. i might of missed something thou. and i noticed that there were only 16 balls on bottom on the 73 bike. i will have to update all this and prob hit the cycle shop for some bearings. hope they carry them.

Check there are none 'stuck' inside steering head with grease.
I've seen them drop down and make steering tight

On a stamped frame pj? The way a 350 frame is made, the bearings could have taken a trip down the back bone of the bike. It is all open, the last fork swap i did on a 350 involed a frame that was FULL of a wasp nest and they were not real happy with me. i killed the shit outta them with rainx and a zippo

The steering stop on the frame is not hitting the lower triple is it. Ive had to adj a 350 frame i did a cb550 fork swip on

Adj = bend the shit out of

I know the frame is open, I've got one here for a 'race' 350 with rear section boxed and a few other mods
I never got round to finishing it, owner disappeared about 6~7 yrs ago ::)
I've seen bearings 'roll' down the front seam and jamb things (unusual, but it happens)
