Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid/ Christine: CASE BACK OPEN...

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...lots o' pics of the RADNESS!!

I wanna get some outside shot with the chain. It kind of gives a little color to the thing. I am thinking now about repainting the shock red to match the chain, but am not sure...what do you guys think?

I was going to tear it up again tomorrow, but the heater core went out of my wife's Expedition. So I will be in that project tomorrow. 8 hr flat rate to change it; you have to take out the console, lower the steering column, and take the whole flippin dash out. I HATE working on cars...give me a big diesel and a power shift any day. I am going to get up super early and get it done, and maybe get some bike time in too!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...lots o' pics of the RADNESS!!

I like that chain. Can't speak for painting the shock, but that's just me.

Heater cores suck. Spring is right around the corner- get her a thick pair of gloves and have her wait it out! :D

Itd be cool if in the future you could use a lcd screen or better (the future version) to display your license. Then at shows you could display some build specs or something fun. Like a home video or the movie "never been kissed". Whatever your into in the future

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...lots o' pics of the RADNESS!!

Oh the reflection in the aluminum inspired that. Nice bike!!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...lots o' pics of the RADNESS!!

An LCD (or maybe even holographic) license would be really cool! Maybe some day it could happen... 8)

Well, I got the stinkin heater core done in about 6 hours, so I beat the book by 2. Everything went pretty well, but still not my favorite pastime. But that also means I got some bike time today! I took some pics as soon as I got home, since there was some sun then. Then I rolled it in the garage, and went to work. I cleaned up the front wiring, shortened harnesses, etc. Then I added a few trim pieces. I polished the muffler stay and started on the pipe. The pipe is going to take some work, and is hard to polish since it is a Ti skin. After all that, I bolted the gas tank on for final disassembly. Then I added some gas, charged the battery, and started the old girl for the first time in 2 MONTHS! Here are some pics of the progress, and a vid of the VTR running. The sound is kind of goofy; it seems that the camera pics up the high sounds too well. But you get the idea. All in all, a GREAT DAY!!!! ;D

sounds as good as it looks... always a THUMBS UP

Thanks Lee! Glad to see you hanging around over here!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

I'm diggin it Tyler. I'm on my phone so I don't get the full affect (or the right side of the pics...) so I'll have to check this again in the morning.

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

Anybody have any experience with Shorai Li FE batteries? They claim one fifth the weight of stock batteries. I am thinking about one, but want to check a little before shucking out the $130 on one. I need to keep the stock capacity, since turning over this twin takes a little doing. But a 7 lb weight loss would be well worth it.

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

Well, looks like I am a go on the battery. It is just too much weight savings to ignore. I am also looking at incorporating a set of stick coils from a CBR600RR onto it, and getting rid of the separate coil units. Might be kind of cool. I got a little work done on the seat, mostly at the transition from tank to seat. This area has bugged me for a while. I will try to get a pic up soon, but it really was not enough work to warrant much. I won't get much done the rest of the week, as I will be out of town until Saturday. Then I plan on a little more frame cleaning and start polishing the rear swinger.

carry on!

I have wondered about these batteries also...my biggest concern is how do you charge them?

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

Just did myself a little research on those batteries, Tyler. I've come to the conclusion that I NEED ONE. They're amazing!

Midcoast, apparently they can take a charge up to their full Ah rating. Most batteries don't like more than 10% of their Ah rating or they overheat. Not a problem with these. You can charge them from dead to full in 20 minutes. The only drawback is poor cold (32*F) weather performance, but per Shorai's website, just warm them up by turning on(!!) your bike's lights 5 minutes before you crank it and it should do fine. Crazy stuff.

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

yep, pretty cool technology. Not a whole lot for drawbacks it would appear, and excellent shelf life. I guess they feel empty in comparison to a lead acid battery. For sure on my list!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

this is looking good. AS for the Shorai battery, someone here just bought one, saw it in their build thread, but can't remember who, think it was either a 550 or 750 build. He made a cool battyer tray for it too. I have been thinkign about one too and did some google searches, found some good review and a test a guy did on his Triumph speed triple. Loolk like execellent batteries but would love to here what someone from DTT thinks.

Keep up the excellent work.

Edit it's Hedrives build http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=11466.160 PM him and ask what he thinks of the battery

Cool Maritime, and thanks for being a guinea pig, Tyler!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

Louie turned me on to this thread for inspiration for a n 89 cbr600 I'm working on. It was a great tip! Lots of killer ideas and info here. What would you recommend for gear for someone wanting to try airbrushing?

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

Check out TCP global fo sho! They have a lot of starter kits. The bottom end Iwata brushes are really good starters too, for not a terrible amount of money. I like the gravity feed top load cups of the Iwata for ease of cleaning between color changes and the small amount of paint needed.
Also, start with the AutoAir Auto Borne series of paints. These will cause you a lot less frustration as they flow a lot better and are easier to control trhough a larger size airbrush tip.
An airbrush compressor is a lot less noisy than a regular compressor, and requires a lot less to regulate also. Hope this helps!

Thanks Joe!

Re: Modern cafe, "Project Kool-Aid"...sun, pics, and VID

Can't see most of the work I have done real well, but you can see some. I really concentrated on the transition between the square front edge of the seat base and the round shape of the tank. I ended up radiusing the front lowere corners of the seat. Then I drilled speed holes in decreasing sizes to the rear of the battery tray, and added mesh to the insides of the speed holes. The diminishing holes help to give a little "flow" to the seat, and the round holes and radiused corners soften the squareness of the seat base. Overall, I think it ties together a little better. Beyond that I have been rewiring my LEDs. They originally had the resistors soldered directly to the LEDs, and these would break due to the brittleness. I sourced up some more resistors here, and soldered the resistor into a wire soldered to the LED. This gives a lot more flexibility, and should improve light life. Anyway, here are a couple pics of the project:
