When I give my bike a full or even 3/4 throttle it's like it slips or winds out high rev and I have to back off for it to kick in. I'm a cafe noob but have reasonable mech skills. Any idea on what the problem could be?

Sounds like your clutch is slipping.
Either out of adjustment, or clutch is toasted.

+1, or you're running some super slippery synthetic oil.

Good point, Ringo. "Energy conserving" oils can be bad news for wet clutches.

Ok thanks guys that's kind of what I was thinking. I'll. Check the adjustment and if that doesn't do it I'll tear her apart.

Why don't you try oil before you tear it apart?

Problem fixed! It seems that the clutch cable must have been original. After 34 years it was all gummed up and not releasing. I replaced it with a new one and I have a whole new bike now. I'm pleasently surprised how quick this thing is!
