Motorcycle paperwork woes you should avoid

Been Around the Block
Let's share some uneventful stories in the world of m/c title and registration, shall we?

I last bought my GS750 from a guy who WASN'T the titleholder (he didn't bother signing the title under his name and getting a new title reissued). Then he wrote the bill of sale with his name. On top of all that, he DID sign his name off in the seller section.

My first trip the the DMV (all occuring out of state) the receptionist scoffed and told me to leave. Some passionate begging and she put a Post it Note over his signature, telling me to return with a bill of sale from the original owner and I'd be set. Second visit I meet the human form of Jabba the Hutt. She ripped the Post it Not right off, saw that I did not sign under the buyer section and threw it back at me. I tried begging, but she promptly got enraged when she had to get up out of her stool so I could hear her through the glass window (her throat chins muffled her voice). She told me I was out of luck, that the title was no good and that she couldn't help me. I wanted to incinerate her with my anger stare.

My third trip and I forged the bill of sale from the previous owner, signed my name under the buyer section and headed back. Somehow I managed to get the woman from my first visit. I was nervous as fuck, but luckily she didn't remember me. Instead, I cracked a joke about it being my third visit, how I left work early for the 20 minute bicycle ride each time and surprisingly she showed me a little compassion. She took a long stare at my bill of sale, smiled, and started the registration application. She was even nice enough to let me pick the new gold/black NY license plate over the boring blue/white one. I almost failed once again when she asked for identification and noticed that I was not a NY resident. I was so lucky to be carrying my passport in my backpack (photocopies for travel) and I was on my way.

If you're unfamiliar with your local DMV locations, ask around to find the best one. I waited over an hour every trip to that DMV in the city not realizing the next closest one had almost zero wait (country) and a far friendlier staff.

Oh, and never accept a motorcycle for free from an ex-con. Especially one without papers and was last registered in 1984 (it was a 1980 model).

you should try getting a drivers license in florida... holy crap... the lady won't even let you stand in line if you got something wrong!

you probably want to call the state trooper office and have them do a vin check to make sure it wasn't reported as stolen, would suck to get a certified letter instead of your title summoning you to appear in court :P
