If you're sitting on your bike the points cover is on the right side of the motor case the round cover toward the front (not on the front). If you have electronic installed there, you'll know, it will probably say dynatech or something like that. Otherwise you'll see to little metal things with screws in em. Then you have points. I would suggest at some point (heh) changing to electronic, its not that difficult to do, and it will save you a TON of headaches down the road.
 
oh..btw to adjust them, its best to have dwell tach, or you can attempt it by ear, again they are a headache if you've never dealt with them before...again id switch to Dyna S electronic system. They can be had relatively inexpensively, and again its not that difficult to install a system, read the directions and there you go. You'll probably have to switch out your coils when doing that however, but you'll have to check.

excellent write!!!!and amusing,you should do this annually with a guest bike.A members recently restored,but untested velocipede(better you than me!)as for your ignition woes,coil or pick up is my guess(points??) and the fuse thing,,,well I owned a ducati 860 and had no faith riding it on a long tour,,sold it and bought an sv(bay of fundy to ottawa in one day) again, a good write,
