My lady took her 93 Mercedes 190E for an e-test today...and came back nearly in tears. It failed. She maintains it regularly and it just got an oil change and plugs done last month. Her plates are expired in under a month and cash flow is TIGHT right now.

Are there any tips for improving test results without spending a lot of cash on repairs?
 
Why did it fail? They should be able to tell you what didn't pass or buy e-test do you mean emmissions test? If so, when's the last time you looked at the o2 sensor and checked the inside of the cat?

i have had buddies cars that failed, ran sea foam through it and was good to go next day it was tested
 
Man - I can't imagine how that car would fail unless something is seriously wrong with it. I had a 1986 Ford F150 with straight side pipes on it on a V8 and it passed with flying colors. My Honda Civic hardly registered anything on the test, and my new MINI spews out air cleaner than what it sucks in I think!

The tests seem very generous with their allowances - which part did it fail?
 
If everything functions as it should, the vehicle will pass no problem. When something stops working (O2 sensor, EGR, etc.) things go "off". Then, if enough time goes by, the cat will burn out too.

That's why they're tested, to ensure the components are functioning properly. As Tim said, old vehicles will pass if they work properly. I've seen 20 year old cars and trucks pass and I've seen 3 year old vehicles fail. Sometimes it's just a "bad" part (eg. O2 sensor). Again, that's why you test it.

She replaced the o2 sensors and did some other repairs. Enough to get a sticker but not a pass.

A few days later, she called me in tears because her car wouldn't start in the morning. Assuming it was a battery issue, I asked Tony (the DTT mechanic) to give me a boost on his way to the shop. He quickly determined that it was a distributor cap issue...so we sprayed it with engine protector. It started right up. I ordered a new cap and rotor the next and put it on. It's running way better now. I imagine that was the issue.
 
Naw, she's pretty tough. However, she loves this ride and she's dropped a boat load of cash into in the last few months. They were tears of frustration.
 
Ahhhh, yes. Another reason to hate Ontario.

Im in Alberta right now. If it burns gas and lots of it all the better. Alberta is getting a little weird especially with its medical system and local bylaws but it beats On. I think everything north of SSM should be Manitoba.
