hey all. I just picked myself up a 1981 CX500c.

THE GOOD: I paid $700 for a 30 year old bike that started right up with about 9000 miles on it.

THE BAD: It looks like this

it's not terrible but it's not at all what I want to be riding.

I have a rough vision of what I eventually want it to look like and I kind of want to borrow elements from all the cool shit from this site. A little bobber, a little cafe a little fighter. A true rat*.

This is my first build so you'll probably be seeing a bunch of code red posts from me when I get stuck or fuck something up. I'm gonna thank you all in advance for your patience.

I guess that's it for now.

Thanks,
Jesse

* the name NIGHT SQUIRREL is what we affectionately call rats in the City of Allston MA where I work. We have a wee bit of a night squirrel problem. Since it's gonna be a combo of elements, I figured the only category it neatly fit into was no category at all, rat ride.

Quick story: Night Squirrels totaled my friend's car.

One of my coworker's lives right above where we work so he has a parking spot out back. One day his check engine lights went fucking nuts. He brought it to the dealership and they said that something was living in his car and had chewed through the wiring for the diagnostic computer. It would eclipse the value of the car to put a new one in since the whole car would have to be dismantled to rewire a new system. Insurance deemed it totaled since without a computer it could not pass inspection.

HENCE night squirrels totaled his car.

Nice bike. I have a GL500 that I am cafe'ing.

If you want more specific info about that bike, http://cx500forum.com/ is the place to find it.

You got lucky with it being an 81, because that means you have t1 ignition instead of CDI, so the stator lasts longer, and is cheaper when you need to replace it. You will want to adjust the cam chain, and valves, but other than that the cx/gl bikes are nearly maintenance free.

Edit: I am not affiliated with cx500forum other than being a member. Im not trying to promote them for my personal gain, just to share info.

I guess I should start a build thread huh?

The parts have started to roll in.

So far I have a deluxe tank, some clubman bars and bar end mirrors assorted other little things.

I have a GL1000 front end waiting for me to come pick it up, hopefully within the next week or so. The whole shebang, wheel, fork legs, trees, calipers, bars and master cylinder. The first time I rode the bike the biggest impression it made on me was how anemic the brakes felt.

The other thing I'm kinda excited about just came in the mail today. A 1982 CB750ss rear comstar wheel. I plan on disassembling the 16" that's on the CX currently and combining it with the spokes and rim from the CB wheel to build an 18" .

absolutely no idea what I'm doing.

^The comstar wheels are not supposed to be disassembled. I know people who have done it, but I dont know if there is anything specific you have to do.

There was an 18" wheel for the cx, but it was the regular comstar, not the reverse comstar like you have.

yeah I know they're not "supposed" to be disassembled. I'm already over on the CX forum and there are a couple of guys who have done this, I believe they post here too. I've picked their brains already. Actually I ordered the wheel before I went brain picking but in the interim found a thread over there confirming that it could and already had been done.

Believe me, I'm not a retard, I don't want to die on a motorcycle because I wanted it to look cool. If it doesn't feel right I'm not gonna run it and I'll chalk it up.

Hey man stoked to see what you do with the bike, maybe we can trade tips and ideas. This is what i've got to work with

Huh?

If the 750 wheel is an 18" already, why arent you just using it?

Taking apart the comstars is a bad idea. Just asking for truoble.

CB750 chain drive--- CX500 Shaft drive he needs to swap the center hubs. As long as he uses the right grad of bolt to re assemble the wheels it should be fine. One of the old members here took a set apart to polish them then did a tutorial on re-assembley, give it a search and you will be amazed.

Cheers,

Maritime

this is a dudes bike from over on the CX forum. Both of these wheels were reassembled comstars and this is dude's race bike. If dude can drag knees on these I feel safe enough.
