New bee needs help.

Fella's, I need a little help. I am working on a 1968 CL450. It has very low miles on it. around 3000. To make a long story short the bike itself is real nice. The engine on the other hand needs some help. It ran good when I got it running but I noticed the kick start was over extended and kept hitting the clutch cover. I only ran it for about 45 seconds. Good Thing. The casting was broke where the Stop is suppose to be on the casting. It was broke right off. Here are some pics. here is my question. as you can see I have it torn down and cracked apart. Can I simply switch the lower casting with another? or if I want to keep the original block do I have to fix this one. I am sure I can fix it but I would like to just switch them out if that is an option. Me being a machinist I would think these were bolted together, machined, unbolted then assembled. If they were done all separate and bolted together in assembly I am home free. Appreciate all feedback even if it is something I don't want to here. Thanks

Welcome to DTT.

I aint no CL450 expert. But surely a $112 1969 w 2071 miles would bolt right up to your top case. Thats why they sell Hondabond. ;) Then you have an extra top case sitting around to trip over.

Nice. I had a feeling. Great!! got a local guy who has a 69 scramble bottom. Here is my second question. This is a 5 speed correct? and is there any difference in this lower case from 5 to 4 speed? Thanks

That 3000K motor is scrap. Look at all the graphite in the sludge... no way any bearing is within spec, your going to throw good money after bad if you don't run down all the tolerances in that thing, whats the rods alone gap out to? Sa song but someone railed that motor into the dust.

Gotta say I agree with Tuna on this one - serious amount of sludge in a motor that's only done 3k (I'd say it's been around the clock).

You should really only change crankcases as a set - they are line bored as a pair and will only be within proper spec with their respective other (although you could get lucky).

With all the gaskets, etc you're up for some $$$ to rebuild - might be better just to find a running engine or part this bike out.

Ya that's pretty much what I had thought myself. Yes there is lots aluminum in the pan and all over the engine. I plan on checking the cylinders as well as the bearings. if its to far gone I will get a new block. Would really like to keep this motor if at all possible. It is a really low number engine. Like #234 in 1968. We will see. Thanks for the info guys.

so what are we talkin for a rebuild. I can have the cylinder bored for 60.00. where can I get all the components for the rebuild? Cheap as possible of coarse :D
