Hello, my name is Rob and I've been lurking this site for quite some time, but I just bought my first bike a few days ago so I figured I would introduce myself. I'm a twenty year old college student living in Baltimore, Maryland. I've worked on cars for quite some time and am ASE certified but am new to bikes. I took the local MSF course and got my license a few months ago.

I was looking around for a good project and happened upon this Suzuki. My dad owned a '78 GS750E when he was practically my age, so I grew up looking at a picture of it so was naturally drawn to a GS when I started looking for a motorcycle of my own.

This is my '80 GS550E that I picked up last week before I started any work on it.

She runs rather well, just needs a thorough cleaning and a few small things here and there. I plan on using this for a mild cafe project and have started working on it already (build thread soon to come).

Welcome to the forum, another GS Zook! Feel free to check out my thread for ideas/things I did to mine, I cafe'd(still working on) a big ass GS 850 shafty. Red Plastic on this forum also has a cafe'd GS1000. There are other GS members on here also, and some great bikes of all makes and models for inspiration and ideas.

Nice man! I just bought the same bike but mine is a 1980. I made a few tweaks such as clubman bars and removing the fenders. Next step is the seat which I'll build using the stock rear cowl. I'll post a thread once I start and I'll look out for your updates as well.

Cool! I was debating making a seat using the rear cowl, but went with more of a traditional cafe style fiberglass seat pan as I was more comfortable making a seat pad for one of those. But sure to let me know when you start that thread, I'd like to see what you have.

Sure thing. I actually have a fiberglass cafe seat made for our bike that my friend included in the sale. But after doing research on this site I saw how cool it looked to build a seat using the stock piece so I decided not to use it. If you haven't already made your fiberglass seat, I have one sitting here that I can sell. Let me know if you need it!

Nice to see someone else from Maryland around here! Unfortunately I am underage and straight edge, but a pizza and/or a ride isn't out of the question eventually?

caridimondo, I just noticed your post now, just curious, how did you mount that seat? I already have one on order but if you happen to have a picture of it, I'll consider buying it from you.

Justin, sounds good mang, I'll be in touch!

Sorry for the late response, I was on vacation all last week. Also, is there a way to get email notification when someone replies to your post?

I never mounted it, it's a brand new custom made fiberglass seat. It hasn't been painted or upholstered. Pics below..
