I'm in Menominee, Michigan...We get about three months good riding up here (at least 3 months guaranteed). I just got a Honda cb550k, 1978 and a bunch of parts for Christmas. I have never owned a motorcycle before, so once I get going on it, I will be bugging this forum incecently (kidding...Most stuff has already been covered...)

I'm debating muscling the bike into the basement so I can work on it there...then take the pieces out in spring for re-assembly...Anyone done this kind of thing? it says 468 lbs on my manual, and I can get a few extra hands. Anyone know off the top of their head how heavy the engine is? Thanks

This forum, thus far, is the best I've found concerning Cafe style bikes. I love it.
 
Hah, that's one place colder than Toronto! ;D Yeah, I've built the rolling chassis and engine separately in my basement, then brought them to the surface for reassembly. Your engine probably weighs around 150 pounds. If you have a strong back you may be able to lift it yourself up the stairs.
 
I am doing the same thing with a slightly smaller CB450 Twin. I was going to re -assemble up stairs and was able to carry my twin engine by myself, then all the parts down. Then I figured I could just assemble the bike in the basement and get 2 people to help push it up stairs on some plywood ramps. I have pushed it up into a truck at about the same angle by myself, a longer push up a flight of stairs with help should be fine. I would keep things like tank and seat off to save weight and possible scratches etc. but having your front brake to help stop it would be good.

I'll get pics up soon...not much to look at right now anyway, but it started and all the lights worked, so it's a good base as far as I can tell (assuming the transmission is not a little pile of metal shavings..)

I was asking about the basement move because I know certain engines/mechanics you can't tip too far from level or the whole works will flood. I will drain the oil and fuel anyway, but I was just curious about any specific issues to watch out for, besides getting crushed by falling motorcycles.

as soon as I finish drywalling the storage room upstairs, I can start on the bike...wife's orders. :p but I will try to find time for a couple of pics tomorrow. Thanks guys.
 
Here's some pics of my bike....I've done nothing but park it so far. Yes, the seat is completely covered in Black duct tape. Wheee!
