HEY GUYS...
MY NAME IS IAN, I RECENTLY PURCHASED MY FIRST BIKE A 1977 YAMAHA XS400.
I PURCHASED THE BIKE FOR $300 FROM MY FRIEND WHO LEARNED TO RIDE A FEW YEARS BACK AND HAS SINCE UPGRADED TO A HONDA SHADOW 750.
HIS 3 UNCLES EACH TOOK OWNERSHIP IN IT'S NEWER YEARS...SO IT HAS BEEN IN THE SAME FAMILY FOR IT'S ENTIRE LIFE.
MY INTENTIONS UPON RESCUING IT FROM THE WINTER IT WOULD HAVE SPENT COVERED IN SNOW ON THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE WAS TO TURN IT INTO A CAFE RACER.
BEFORE I COULD LET THE COSMETIC ASPECTS GET ME ALL CAUGHT UP I HAD TO SEE IF IT STILL RAN, AS IT WAS SILENT THE PAST FEW YEARS.
TO START MY FRIEND SUGGESTED I PUT NEW GASKET SEAL IN AS HE REMEMBERED A LEAK OF A PROBLEM.NEXT A NEW BATTERY AND AN OIL CHANGE AND SOME GAS. SHE DID NOT WANT TO START.AFTER THAT I CLEAND THE PLUGS WITH A WIRE BRUSH TO GET THE CORROSION OFF THE CONTACTS, RESET THE GAPS, TORE THE AIR BOXES OFF AND PUT MY FRIEND ETHER TO WORK. STARTED UP IN THREE TRYS WITH THE ELECTRIC START, AND KICKS OVER IN ONE. I'VE SINCE REMOVED THE STOCK SEAT, REAR FENDER AND LIGHTING, MAKING WAY FOR A CUSTOM SEAT FROM SEAN AT ROC CITY CAFE IN ROCHESTER NY, SWAPPING STOCK BARS FOR CLUBMANS. BUILDING A NEW BATTERY BOX TO RELOCATE THE BATTERY IN THE REAR OF THE BIKE UNDER THE SEAT BUBBLE TO MAKE WAY FOR A PAIR OF K&N AIR FILTERS. I'LL POST SOME PICTURES FROM DELIVERY TO IT'S PROGRESS AS OF EARLIER IN THE WEEK...ANY TIPS PLEASE AND THANKS.

THANKS. I'M AWAY FROM THE PROJECT NOW SPENDING THE HOLIDAYS IN FLORIDA WARMING UP MY HANDS FOR THE LONG WINTER TO BE SPENT IN THE GARAGE.
THE FORUM IS HELPING ME COPE WITH MY NEW CASE OF SEPARATION ANXIETY AND GIVING ME SOME NEW INSPIRATION FOR A COLOR SCHEME.
ALSO TINKERING WITH THE IDEA OF CUTTING DOWN THE STOCK FRONT FENDER OR JUST SCRAPING IT ALL TOGETHER.
LOOKING TO ORDER MY CLUBMAN BARS FROM AIRTECH IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS..SO I CAN GET BACK TO WORK AS SOON AS I GET BACK TO THE COLD.
I'M NOT THE TALLEST RIDER [5 '8] SO I'M WONDERING IF I SHOULD GO WITH REGULAR CLUBMANS THAT ARE A LITTLE LESS OF A REACH OR SPRING FOR THE CLIP-ONS?
 
A more welcome form of communication seems to be necessary, so I will be shedding my caps lock and refraining from ending any of my posts with phrases such as PERIOD or EXCLAMATION POINT. ;D

thanks for the pics right off the bat.
I have found that drag bars work for me as far as pull back and fit I am 5'8 and ride an xs650 with no real issue for pull and riding comfort. I think the 400 frame is relativly similar to my 73 650. I like not having to rest all my weight down hills on my wrist. I also avoided rear sets bacause I like my knees just the way they are. I am not getting any younger either. any questions just ask there are a lot of yammie fans around.
As to the caps almost every program I work with I need cap locks so I forget from time to time hey what are you going to do. just tell people your loosing your hearing so you type in caps, that will really confuse them.
