Just a quick hey to all.
So I picked up a 71cb175, she's not great but not bad. Gonna build it up for my niece.
Already fixed a few little things but promised myself that I wouldn't really get a start on it until at least this weekend ( gotta get some things done and some time with the family first)
One thing I will not be doing is a complete engine take down. Every other time I've gone that far I get too bogged down on the details and end up adding cubic time and dollars to the project, so if I deem it necessary I will find someone local to do it, it looks like I'm lucky in that I've got a guru down the street from me in "Teazer" and hopefully if it comes to that he might know some local guys to help.
Once I decide what I'm gonna do to it I will try to set up a schedule and maybe post a build.
Thanks
M.J.N.

Welcome to DTT. Those little 175s can be an absolute blast. Looking firward to seeing what you do with it.

She runs okay right now but I'm sure that with a little work it will come along, she maxed out at about 55 with me on it and I'm sure I'm not exactly the target weight for this bike. She has some stumbles that I'm sure I can iron out with some fiddling on the carbs. She might also need some exhaust to get her to pur. But for the time being I have to hold off otherwise I will be neck deep into it before I know it.

Weight won't have much bearing on your top speed, just how quickly you get there. Now how well you tuck, that makes a big difference. I'm 6' 165lbs and sitting up vs getting aero is a night and day difference.

On the mechanical side of things, check your compression, your points gap/timing, cam timing, valve adjustment, spark plug gap and jetting. You may very well be right about the exhaust. I never realized how choked mine was in the upper rpm range until I ditched my mufflers for straight pipes with simple baffles.
