Hi, I'm new to the site and new to motorcycles in general. I'm looking to learn as much as I can, and have started looking at taking the Basic RiderCourse to get me started.

I want a bike that I can learn on, but can also build up as I get more experienced. From what I've found, a Honda CB350/400 or Yamaha XS650 would be a good start for someone with my experience level and size (6'1", 155lbs).

I'll post up my progress, but does anyone have any recommendations for safety gear brands (helmet, jacket, gloves, shoes/boots, etc)? I don't wear leather (vegan) and live in SoCal so something breathable would be nice.

Welcome! Glad to see another southern californian. Xs650 is definitely a good starter bike, my dad, mom, and I all started on one and I am selling mine soon. Interested?
 
Thanks! I'm pretty excited to get into cycles. I'm coming from the VW/Audi tuning scene so it's such a change to to 2 wheels.

As for the XS650, I don't have my M1 yet, but yea, PM me details and let's talk. I'm in the SFV.

Also, give me riding gear advice so I can start shopping for a jacket, gloves, and helmet.

As for gear, both me and my bud have EXL mesh, armored jackets which are nice and comfy. HJC helmets are good, I have a THH and it is good too. Both pretty inexpensive too.
I would say just go to a bike shop and try on some stuff, see what is comfortable, especially for gloves.
 
for a helmet, I really like the Scorpion EXO-750 in matte black. I haven't tried anything on yet, but as far as features, reviews, and price goes, it looks perfect.

still need to think about armored jackets, gloves, and shoes/boots. i was hoping i could get into a ridercourse this weekend, but they were all booked up. have to wait a few weeks with my current schedule. i cant wait!

I know it'll be a mission since your in the SFV but Mt. San Antonio college has the MSF course several times a week, I just took it a few weeks ago and you learn on 250cc bikes, the cost was $250 and with your card once you pass, you get discounts at a few bike places, you could get you apparel and stuff after the course.
