Newb from Ontario

Been lurking a while, and my lurking finally paid off.

I'm the guy that bought this 550: http://dotheton.com/index.php?PHPSESSID=0f0db0b9aaa48b017d0d63702b3012ad&topic=5382.0
but it's definitely not the one spotted at Kensington because it's not running. I've missed out on a few beat up bikes so when I saw this, I pounced.

Rented a pickup and the seller had ramps so we got her in the Ram bed pretty easily. Getting her off was a different story. I had myself, a ladder, a small piece of MDF and a handful of prayers. After nearly crushing myself, I managed to bust my back and barely save her from smashing onto my recently resealed and pristine driveway.

I used to tinker with cars a bit. The usual import stuff. No fabrication. Just wrenching, swapping suspension, slapping together a motor, clutch jobs. Basically hand tools stuff. Went through 3 civics, a corolla, an mr2 and 2 miatas. Now I drive a family car cause I got a family, and a growing one at that.

Anyway, I've only been on a bike twice in my life: the first day of the M2 course and the second day of the M2 course. I'm a complete bike newb. And this was 2 summers ago so I barely remember anything. Brake on the right, clutch on the left ... that's about all I know. All my cars were fuel injected so carbs is also something I'll learn about. I'm going to take everything slowly since I'm just not in a hurry at all. Plus, I'm on a budget.

Plans are to just get the bike running first, and then to get it running right, and then I'll consider what I want to strip off it, and finally what I might want to add to it. Hopefully it doesn't fall apart before I get a chance to take it all the way thru the process. I'm gonna have a lot of questions and very little progress so I hope everyone here can lend a hand.

How about a first question: is the transmission toasted if it clicks going into first and second, but I can't seem to hear the same click going into the higher gears? And a second questions: where is a good place to look for used tanks and what fits easily on the 550 frame? The current tank seems to have a nice rust bubble on the side and I may eventually have to replace once I get a chance to check how bad it is.

Cheers!
Shane

welcome to the forum.
Where in ONtario are you from?

I have a spare cb550f tank that is treated on the inside, sanded down to bare metal and clearcoated if you are interested.

Thanks for the heads up! I'm from Markham. Probably going to check everything out before I start throwing my limited money around. Make sure I put money where money is needed. Anyone else from Markham?

Welcome Shane!
