Newtronic vs. Bore Tech ignition.

djelliott

Real bikes are built in garages.
One thing I know for sure on my CL350 Cafe build is that I'm going to use an electronic ignition. Dyna currently doesn't make an ignition for the twin CB's so I've narrowed it down to these two. The cost difference is pretty huge. Newtronic around $189 and Bore Tech around $369. Both seem to be used a lot. I'm just looking for individual testimonials of the afore mentioned ignitions to help me make my choice. So far this forum and it's members have dealt me aces in the good info department. Thanks folks.

I've used Newtronics when they were Piranha Ignitions.
Does away with point, allows another couple of thousand rpm if you need it.
It's relatively cheap, you still need battery to power it
If you not racing, and don't need loads of adjustability, and self generated system its probably easiest thing to get, fit and forget. (hell, I would probably use it anyway, I'm to cheap to buy the Bore Tech)

Thanks PJ. I've read a lot about it and it sounds great. The bike I'm building now is just for fun, I won't be racing it (on a track at least ;D). I love the people at Bore Tech, but the price difference so far has Newtronic in the lead.

PJ - Should I be able to use a Newtronic system on my 175?

I dont remember if the housing is large enough diameter on 175? (where points plate fits)
Backplate may need reducing in diameter to fit 175?
CB360 points plate is about 2.4" diameter, check dia of 175, if its same it will fit, if its smaller it may be possible to reduce Newtronics?
The trigger unit mounts to camshaft/advancer backplate same on both bikes.
I know I've made larger diameter backplates, fitted 3cyl Kawasaki model onto Suzuki triples

if money is no object, search pazon ignition systems, as for newtronics is there a North american supplier????????food for thought ,your stock coils may not work with these systems,,,,rule of thumb points coils 5 ohms, electronic 3 ohms.another option is to retain the points system, scrap the stock coils, and fit with Yamaha xs coils(points type) you can replace the plug wires they screw out and they will tuck in under your tank,,,,,,,,,,good luck

Thanks for the info Todd. I already had to replace the coils so that won't be a problem. HV Cycle appears to be their North American supplier. I've talked with them and they have what I need in stock.

Thanks PJ - Yeah the points cover on the 175 is slightly smaller. Ive seen Batemen modify his plated to fit under - I wouldnt mind doing that. As WeeTodd said though, not sure itll be condusive with the coil I installed. Thanks!
