Noob oil change issues

Changed my oil today on my 1980 Honda CB400T. I ran the bike for a couple minutes then drained the oil and put in a new filter and added the 2 quarts of oil that the manual told me to. So then I wait a couple minutes and check the oil dipstick and it shows that the oil is WAY to high. Next, I tried draining some oil back out and it still shows that the oil is much too high.

Am I doing something wrong?
 
The oil doesn't smell like gas that I can tell. Also, I had the gas tank off and ran the bike til it died before I changed the oil.
 
I didn't do anything with the carbs either.

After looking at the amount of oil in the drain pan, is it possible that all the oil jus didn't drain out? Is there a reason that would happen?
 
Did you drain the oil from the sump drain plug or did you just undo the filter and let it drain from there? If it's the latter, then you haven't drain the bike completely of oil.
 
There are two oil specs for your bike, one is a dry fill and one is a wet fill.
The dry fill is for after you rebuild the engine, when there is no oil in it.
My cb400f takes something like 3 qts after rebuild, but the oil change is only 2.3 (off the top of my head probably wrong numbers but you get the idea)
You cant drain all of the oil out, some stays in the head, and some stays in the oil pump, some in the galleys etc.

My guess is you put in the engines full capacity, so youre probably a half quart or so high.

Hmm...where is this sump drain plug? The manual only says to remove the oil drain bolt and cover.

Yes, I saw the two different numbers in the manual, however I only put in 2 quarts which is what the manual specifies for a normal oil change. It is 3.2 or something for a complete disassembly.

Possibly a clog somewhere?
I always kick mine over a few times to drain the oil all the way out.
 
I don't have a kickstarter on my 80 Hawk :). I guess I'll drain some more out tomorrow and get more oil, then warm it up longer maybe? Then try again. I don't remember having this issue the last time I changed the oil.
 
Make sure the kill switch is off and bump the starter a few times :)
 
Well, I tried again and I think I got it right this time :). I had to hit the electric start quite a few times to get all the oil to drain out though.
