North Carolina Title Questions

I searched around the forums and it doesn't seem like, unless I did a bad job, that anyone has pulled off or posted about getting a title in NC for a bike that came without paperwork. If anyone has pulled it off I think a few of us could benefit from any advice. It seems as if NC is one of the worst states for trying to get this kind of thing done. I have checked into the usual Broadway, ITS, etc... services and NC won't honor their titles.

Have you gone to the NC DMV's website http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/ ? it has all the information that you will need to get the bike titled! Do you have a bill of sale from the person you bought the bike from? You can usually use that to get the process started.

I just got back from the license plate office to get a title for my '74 CB450. When I bought the bike, the seller assured me he had the title, but after more than a year he could not produce it, so he agreed to pay the $85 to go through ITS to get the title. A couple of weeks ago I got a Bill of Sale and Registration for my bike from a dealer in Alabama. Also included was a letter from a Judge of Probate in Alabama, explaining that Alabama does not title vehicles '74 and earlier.

The crabby old lady at the license plate office kinda gave me the stink eye, but she filled out the paperwork and took my $43 for a new title. Only catch is I still have to take the bike to the DMV to be inspected before they will issue the title, but I have up to a year to get that done. I guess the bottom line is that the ITS trick will work in NC.

From my research prior to deciding to go with ITS, I did find out the only other way I could have gotten a NC title was to have purchased an "indemnity bond" equal to the value of the bike ($100 per the DMV) and have the bike inspected by the DMV. I went with ITS because it was a little cheaper and I thought I would get around the inspection requirement that way (which I didn't)

I had read that ITS wouldn't work so i didn't want to waste the money but that is awesome that it will, that was the original plan until i saw that NC would not allow it. I even saw one story of an office being sent to collect a title from the owner? . I don't see any problem with having the bike inspected so that shouldn't be bad. I am trying to avoid talking to the DMV They seem to be especially pissy up here in the Buncombe. I will give it a go that way and see if it all works out and report back if I get it to work!

Out of curiosity did you have any problems with using ITS? I have read all good reviews but since you have first hand experience thought I would ask. How long did they take etc...?

No problems. I got the stuff back from them in about 2 weeks.

When I read your post that NC wouldn't honor their titles, I got a little scared so I headed right to the DMV to see what they would say. So far so good. Hope the inspection process and issue of the title works out OK.

I hope i didn't jinx you by saying anything ;D I think I am going to go the same route, 83 dollars and if it works that is pretty cool. If not then I am only out 83 dollars and I learned a lesson. But if it worked for you then I am pretty comfortable trying that route. Guess i will go ahead and send it in tomorrow or friday and see what happens then. The 175 is road ready now and I am getting itchy to take it farther than around the neighborhood!
