oil light on at low rpm

zz2

ken oath
again another retardedly n00b question from zz2 here...

riding my 81 DOHC CB750F in traffic today i noticed that the oil warning light was coming on at under 1200 - 1500rpm.
the bike has plenty of oil but and the issue only pops up when the bike is at operating temp. is this a sign of the oil pump on its way out or perhaps the previous owner was running it on a thinner oil? i should add that the weather in my part of the world is a mild 15°C (59°F)

i also have some minor oil leaks around the rocker cover gasket and tacho drive that im going to replace in the next week or so... but surely that cant be resulting in this oil pressure drop?

it's probably not good, you won't lose enough oil pressure to turn the light on by leaking through gaskets, unless there's a big hole on the inside edge of the gasket... you'd definitely notice that much oil leaking out. often this is caused by a blocked up oil pickup screen, I'd recommend not riding it until you figure out the issue, you're probably running at higher rpms with just enough oil pressure to turn the light off, when it should be many times higher than it is... the longer you ride it this way, the more damage you're going to do

+1 to what rock city said and I will add that if you are lean and the bike gets too hot it will flick that light on, even when there is lots of oil. As a noob to bikes rider I was riding mine in a lean situation, oil light was coming on at idle. I would pull over, check oil, plenty, go WTF? ride again for a bit and light would come on etc. couldn't figure it out, then was riding down the highway at 6000 RPM, bike got hot, oil light came on I didn't get a chance to pull over and crunch, bang, boom, lost right piston. Not good. Check it out before you ride too much or too far.

OOPS it was only 6K not 60K

I would pull sump and check pickup, can't remember if you have to take exhaust off first?
You are checking with bike upright and your not screwing dipstick in when checking level?
