Piston Ring Question

hey guys here´s the story:

i´m just replacing my pistons on my RD,got that sucker honed and now im confused by the piston rings....

i need help with the positioning of my piston rings.

i placed the oil (wrinkly) ring exactly as it was on the original piston (see picture).
the manual that was sent with the pistons now says that the other rings have markers that mark the topside of the rings...
there are markings but they dont match with the section of the rings.

one ring is slightly bigger than the other one...so i guess the bigger one will go on top on the smaller one over the oil wrinkly ring on bottom.

the ends are pointed-->does it mather in which direction the pointy end face?

Your ring set came with instructions for a four cycle engine also. Just ignore that portion of information. If one ring is larger, it goes in the larger groove. The cut-out at the end of the ring, is to allow the pin to hold it in place. This... won't... allow the ring gap to encroach into the port area of the cylinder. On a 4 cycle engine, the rings are allowed to wander around. A 2 stroke must locate the rings in a manner to keep them in a fixed place, so the end won't snag the edge of a port.

thanks scooter.
piston rings get locked by the pins.
both grooves have the same deepness, but the bottom one has the oil ring installed,so i guess this is the place where the 'smaller'ring goes...?

the instructions show that there are marks on the rings to show the topside of them.
should the pointed piece if the ring opening meet the pin or the angled one?

thx

The end of the rings should fit under the pins. Isn't there a picture in your manual that shows the orientation? The oil expander/control ring goes under the bottom ring, if memory serves correct.

good god man it only fits together one way

yes i know, but i´m confused about 2 things right here.

figure 2 and 3 on the description show sections of the rings, there are markings stamped into the rings.

both rings have the marking on the same side, pointed side of the ring down.
so figure 3 shows WRONG information.

made 2 little sketches for you.

which direction is right?

The top one. The pin is captured.

nice!

and i guess since one of the rings is bigger then the other one the smaller one goes on bottom (goes over oil ring) and bigger one will go top!?

thx!

the bottom ring insert is an expander helps to keep the ring tensioned
not an oil ring per se
yes the top drawing you would not be able to assemble it like in the bottom drawing
