preping for powdercoat

sorry if this have been covered in another thread

i am in the process of breaking down my cb360 wheels. i plan on powdercoating hubs, spokes, nipple, rims. my friend has been doing part time coating out of his garage for a couple years. is he a pro? no. does he do good work? yes. his coating experience is primarily with raw steel pretty simple stuff. having said all that, what type of prep work do i need to do to the parts to get them ready for powder?

i know the obvious, clean, remove rust. does the metal have to be sanded smooth? lightly sanded? i plan do test some small insignificant parts before bigger items like hubs and rims.

You want the best possible surface for powder (just like paint). Sandblast, acid etch, whatever it takes.

I'm sure somebody else will chime in, but be sure to protect the threads on the spokes too.

And there are some threads floating around about this..... they would have more info than I can provide.

first you have to strip the metal, then blast, then wipe down, if they are really bad an outgas cycle may help

thanks for the tips. the metal is just raw aluminum with some oxydation; do i still need to strip it? and what should i use?

if it is raw metal then it only needs blasted
