Project 'Annabel Lee' (ordering new parts for winter- advice needed)

Been Around the Block
Ok...done creeping...finally got a bike. :)

This is my new 1972 CB350 and I'm open to ideas from you all. I'm new to this, so whatever I do will be a learning experience. The bike is in pretty good shape, so I don't want to completely cafe it. I'm thinking of sticking with the stock paint and all, maybe with some touch-ups. I don't want to do anything big that wouldn't be reversible. Here's a short walkthrough of what the bike is like now, and the problem areas I've noticed. Please leave feedback on these if you can.

Ugly windshield and Sissybar (already removed).

Very minor rust spots including the top of the headers. Any recommendations for cleaning this up?

Bike came with original tool kit.

Some small imperfections in the tank paint which I can't figure out how to remove without having to repaint the tank.
IMG_0011.jpg

Covers, etc. need polished or replaced if too damaged. What do you think?

Bike has some starting problems (electric start sort of ticks or kinda grinds, but won't turn over), and won't idle properly sometimes. Any recommendations on this? Checked and recharged battery. Don't know why it drops/putters out like that and does not do it every time. Carb issue?

Also, front brake won't light the tail lamp, but rear brake will.

Things I Want To Accomplish
-Clubmans
-Carb Rebuild
-Rust Removal
-Header Wraps
-LEDs under the Speedo and Tacho
-Wiring fixes for the front brake which won't light the tail-light
-Polishing Clutch Covers and pretty much any parts that need it
-Possible replacement of seat with a lower one and removable cowl (project for winter perhaps)
-Some wiring and hose replacement/covering

Anyone have any recommendations on some basic engine maintenance to do if I actually end up removing the engine when I disassemble the rest?

Also, any suggestions as to touch-up painting on frame where a little bit of rust from crap being kicked up?

Thanks everyone in advance. All of the posts on this site led me to purchase this bike.

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

That's a really nice bike to start with. I diffinitely would leave the paint stock.

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Good clean bike to start with. Keep the tank the way it is. Just shoot a few coats of clear. The patina will add to the look. Should look killer when you are done. It will be easy to change it all back if you decide to sell it in the future. It will fetch more money that way. you may consider looking for another seat to shave down and recover. Have you seen this: (finished) http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=8488.0 and the build http://dotheton.com/index.php?topic=6738.0 Good luck. take lots of photos.

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Rextex- yup...love Tiger Army. Big fan of Nick 13 from AFI days as well.

Everyone, curious as to what I should be looking to pay for a seat from a salvage yard that I can use for a bobber seat. I'm new to this, so I'm not looking to get swindled!

Also, I'm wondering how to go about the naked look on the bike w/ an electric start, etc. Any recommendations for a battery box build that would fit everytihng needed and still allow for a two-up seat? Thanks.

Hey bro great looking bike! its a great starting point as its complete, with the salvage yard and the seat it dosnt matter if your new or have been going to them for a long time, all you have to do is be confidant! so when you go in and ask for what you want then they give you a price just say "come on man you can do better than that" ;D.... always worth a try LOL has worked for me many times and have ended up with some great bargins!!

Thanks. Looks like SausageMahoney's bike is kick only. Is there a way to get that naked look with an electrics box containing everything needed (e.g. battery, rectifier, etc.)?

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Nice score, good luck with sticking to your list and not getting side tracked on a million other modifications. hehe

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Can someone give me some ideas on how to get the bike up off the ground without an actual motorcycle jack. I have jacks and stands for cars. Could those be utilized? Its up on the center stand right now. I also have milk crates, wood, etc. Just looking for suggestions on something sturdy. Thanks.

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

get a 2x6... drill a hole in it and put a bar off that to use as lever... then you just turn it... lifts it right up!
here is a how to:

That's awesome! Why isn't that in the $50 mod thread?

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Anyone offer advice for wire removal without destroying the present wires? Are they normally cut to remove or what?

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Ok....things are rapidly coming off of the bike. Pics to be posted soon. I was wondering if someone could offer some insight on my conception of where I want the bike to go.

I want to retain the electric start, but want to develop the naked look of sausagemahoney's sleek and sexy bike. However, I also want a two up seat. Any recommendations for placement of a electronics/battery box with such a design? Also, is it feasible to build an inner fender, with a bobbed rear fender, using fiberglass and the stock fender as a mold?

I would like any recommendations. The two up seat is kind of screwing up any battery/component placement, while at the same time keeping that naked look. Anything you guys can offer would be great. Thanks

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

You can cut everything from under the seat between the the two frame rails and weld a new batter box that is only deep enough for a sealed battery to lay on it back in there.
This battery is only 3 3/16" when it's on it's back. the frame rails will cover about 1" of that and so about 2 1/5" of the box would show under the seat above the carbs.
You're on you own with the rest of it. The only option for a two up seat I've seen that I like is when people leave the stock length, make a new pan and use a 1" thick pad to lower the profile.

before you do any disassembly to the engine, you should check the compression and make sure it's decent in both cylinders.
carb problems to look for are leaks in the diaphragms inside the carbs, and the rubber intake manifolds between the carbs and engine.

good luck with your build.

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

Stuff is slowly but surely coming off the bike. Pens Playoffs and work and the GF have been monopolizing my time this week.

Carbs are off. Anyway to fix that top that is a little rusted/pitted.
100_6127.jpg

Can someone recommend the best type of wire brush to get for rust removal and general cleanup? Also, is there any removing rust from the pipes, or am I stuck with it? I was pretty sure I heard not to do the electrolytic rust removal with chrome. So yeah, any rust removal techniques/supplies, etc. would be appreciated.

Am I going to have to end up repainting these covers?

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

as far as the carb tops, best you can do with that much oxidation is blast them, prep and paint. the chrome is very pitted, at least the right one pictured.

for the exhaust rust, my stock pipes were much cleaner, so i used steel wool and wd40. a larger stiff wire brush will probably be a good start, along with some solvent/cleaner. you can always clean them best you can, wrap them...

as far as the side covers, i'd strip the factory paint, and polish them. or repaint if you prefer that look.

and...go wings!

Re: Project 'Annabel Lee'

you can polish those covers, that is just the clear going bad, if you paint your carb tops you need to use and ENGINE paint as that will hold up the best to gas and fumes... makeing progress man nice work!
