Project: Impossible Nightmare

G'Day from the east coast of Canada, I've been working on a 1978 GS550 and posting around a bit. I thought I'd bring my work over to DTT just to see what the response is.

Quick history, Bought August 2013 for $275 without registration, got it running in less than 2 months, 90% used or built from scratch parts, got the registration in my name July 2014 and very close to putting it on the road as of the end of fall this year. the project was referred to as impossible and a nightmare (on another forum) after I divulged that I plan to re-jet my carbs to run with pods and a halved 2" glasspack for mufflers.

I'll get started on the evolution pics today, and next time I'll probably post up a few of the "work that went into it so far" pics

- the day I bought it (sorry for the quality, bad phone camera)

- This is about 2 weeks after I bought it you can see a few things that I've done, and some parts still missing

- paint and some work, you can't see it, but I built my own intake manifold.

- added mirrors and signals for safety.

- I cut a cherry bomb in half and welded adapters on before I stopped working on it in the fall. but I mocked it up just to see how it would look and what I'd have to do to mount them properly.

If this Project gins interest I have lots to post. Let me know what you think!

i've been thinking about the lack of direction of my build, black and chrome is a pretty common theme, i like my Skeleton hand mirrors, and the LED blinkers, my gauge pod is ugly/broken, so is my headlight bucket, i had a look at a few really nice examples of steampunk mods last night, not sure i want to go that way but it gives me a few ideas. i think i'm going to put a list here of my to do's and want to do's to help me along later.

to do:
- Finish exhaust welding and paint flat VHT (add rear mounts for support)
- Valve shim check/replacement
- New front tire
- Finish refurbing the front brakes
- build a good seat to replace the temporary one I made, I have most of the stuff, just been too busy with the rest of it, and no place to do it in the middle of winter
- repair headlight bucket
- re-jet for pods & exhaust, (eventually going to buy some higher end pods)
- buy tach cable, spark plug wires and boots
- replace chain and sprockets as they appear to be worn out
- fix snapped rear right blinker (brand new, cheap material)

want to do:
- clean engine, polish/paint more
- disassemble gauge pod, figure out how i want to re-do the indicator lights and gear selection panel
- shorten rear shocks
- new grips
- rebuild front forks (thought they seem ok)
- replace rubber lines with copper or steel line, just because I like how it looks.

anyway I guess that's it for now.

I might just pull the gauge pod off sometime soon to see if i can figure something out since there's 4 feet of snow everywhere and nothing else to do :/
