pulling off an "unfinished" frame. How to keep it from rusting over.

Been Around the Block
I'm doing a frame project where I want to leave it fairly satin polished steel -- no paint.

I think this would rust over in about 5 minutes, so wondering if anyone has successfully done this. I've heard that just clear coating it with a rattle can paint will work temporarily.

My thoughts are maybe a beeswax or something other that may have worked for someone?

honestly I think it would keep for a little while at least...I know my frame has had a few spots on the back end left in bare metal from bracket removal for a good little while with no rust in sight. I've been thinking, too, how cool it would look with a bare frame...doubt i'll ever do it...

I agree with the 2k clear, and for spray canning it, spraymax 2k is the bee's knees

Thank you, who carries the spraymax 2k -- I'll give that a try.

I just finished using spraymax on my tank, seat and a guitar body I am building for a friend. That stuff is absolutely amazing. I had a friend polish the tank and seat when I finished and he said it was near body shop quality. ---WEAR A RESPIRATOR---

Another option is clear powder coating. Not sure if it's as good or better than paint clear coating. I had an old office chair blasted and clear powder coated and so far so good. Been thinking about the same on my new custom rigid frame.

Where do you get clear powder coating done around here? I have some stuff I wouldn't mind doing up.

I've done all of my powder coating at Byers Bush in Etobicoke. It's an industrial shop but they do a lot of motorcycle stuff. They plugged/taped off all the critical areas of my frame etc. when I did them a few years back.

Might not be show-quality, but my gloss black frame, swingarm etc. are all still in great shape and I'm happy, especially considering the price.

These guys right here...

actually ordered 2 cans of the stuff yesterday to clear my wheels and possibly frame....top notch service. If you have a business to ship to, it will save you some money (i'm having mine shipped to my job as well)

Hope this helps!

POR does a product made specifically to seal polished metals and I've been wanting to give it a try. It's expensive and I haven't seen any reviews, but I know their other stuff is top notch and I see no reason why this wouldn't follow suit.

Yep. Same place I got mine til the place down the road started carrying it AND they have the facilities to mix to paint codes. Did my daughter's guitar that way. Came out so nice.
