question about CB360- replacing gearshaft spindle

Anyone know how to go about replacing the gearshaft spindle on a CB360? Its the long metal rod that goes all the way through the lower crankcase- on the left side the shift foot lever attaches to the splines and on the right it attaches to the clutch. The engine is out of the frame and the side covers are off. My ribbed area that the actual clutch foot lever attaches too is all stripped and I want to put a new one in. Some guidance would be appreciated. Hoping to not have to take the clutch and lower case all apart. Thanks.

Pull right cover, remove primary drive gears and clutch, depress 'hook' at top on gear change drum then slide it out.
Can't remember if it's 360 or XS650 that has circlip on left side (pretty sure it's XS but thought I would mention it as I can't be bothered to go and look ;D )
